    June 15, 2022 – For the first time since 2019, Wisconsin family law lawyers are gathering in person for the State Bar of Wisconsin's 41st Annual Family Law Workshop, Aug. 4-6 at Stone Harbor Resort in Door County.

    “I’m particularly excited to see everyone again,” says Donna Ginzl of Stevens Point, co-chair of the organizing committee with Lindsey Cobbe of Madison.

    Ginzl has attended the Workshop since 2008 and helped to organize it since 2017. Why? “It is really the best opportunity to mix family law CLE and networking opportunities, with some rest and relaxation in a really beautiful setting,” she said. “The CLE has high quality content that is timely for issues in our practice.”

    More on the 2022 Family Law Workshop

    The 2022 Family Law Workshop, produced by the State Bar of Wisconsin Family Law Section, is three half-days of CLE programming along with many opportunities for socializing and relaxation on the shores of Sturgeon Bay in Door County.

    Day 1 features internationally recognized mediator and former practicing clinical psychologist Dr. Gregory Firestone speaking on negotiation and collaboration skills.

    “This session is three years in the making – since Dr. Firestone was scheduled for the 2020 Workshop, which was canceled due to the pandemic,” Ginzl said. “We held a virtual workshop last year, but this important session really needs to be in person, so he graciously agreed to come this year.”

    The session will include something almost everyone needs to work on, says Ginzl: “Our listening skills. As lawyers, we are always listening to respond, but we also need to work on listening to understand. Dr. Firestone can help us learn the skills to help bring consensus – something that’s important in all our cases.”

    Days 2 and 3 offer two CLE tracks: one for those new to the family law field, and a second track for the experienced practitioner.

    Presentations will help you improve your conflict resolution and listening skills and your ability to collaborate. They include:

    • working with children with mental health and transgender issues;

    • family court commissioner’s advice on addressing cases with domestic violence;

    • dealing with cryptocurrency in a divorce case;

    • case law information and updates, and more.

    “I’m particularly interested in the cryptocurrency CLE, as I think we all need to learn more about it,” Ginzl said. “I found out that it is important to add the question about cryptocurrency on your client intake sheet – so you know if your case involves it.”

    Bring your family along for networking and appetizers at the poolside patio reception on Thursday evening. On Friday, you can attend an optional fish boil – a Door County tradition at a local waterfront restaurant.

    Up to 14 CLE credits including 1 EPR and 3 GAL-minor credits will be applied for this workshop.

    “I cannot think of a better way to get nearly all of your CLE requirements, including those for ethics and GAL work, in a more beautiful, fun, and relaxing environment,” Ginzl said.
