Boost Your Profile, Expand Your Network: Serve on a State Bar Committee

By volunteering to serve on a State Bar of Wisconsin committee, not only do you help your profession, but you make lasting connections with your colleagues. State Bar President-elect Kathy Brost is seeking volunteers to serve on a committee for the 2020-21 fiscal year -- apply by April 15.

Feb. 5, 2020 – The State Bar relies on hundreds of attorneys each year to serve on its boards and committees, and to put on continuing education programming. Volunteers help the State Bar provide the highest level of programming to assist attorneys.

Kathy BrostKathy Brost, U.W. 1992, is president-elect of the State Bar of Wisconsin and works at Legacy Private Trust Co. in Neenah.

A constant stream of new volunteers, with their new innovative ideas and different perspectives, helps the State Bar serve the membership and assists the legal profession to move forward.

In May, it will be my honor as president-elect to make appointments to the various State Bar committees, task forces and working groups. I encourage you to make the most of your membership in the State Bar by volunteering to serve on a State Bar committee. Volunteering for the State Bar can boost your profile within the legal community and expand your network.

If you have never volunteered for the State Bar, please consider doing so now. If you have volunteered in the past, thank you so much! Please consider volunteering again this year!

The State Bar needs your talent, ideas, and perspectives.

    Why Volunteer?

As your organization, the State Bar provides opportunities for you. Plus, the more you give your time, talent, and ideas, the more that you personally receive in return – I know this from personal experience.

For example, as a volunteer, you benefit by building connections with other attorneys from throughout the state who are interested in the same issues that you are. You benefit from hearing other perspectives and opinions on topics that interest you. You also benefit from being able to make an impact on the legal profession going forward.

In fact, we all benefit when you volunteer to serve on a State Bar committee – you win, the State Bar wins, and your clients and colleagues win as well.

Please take a moment to visit WisBar.org and view the Leadership Opportunities and Committees pages, then submit a Committee Volunteer Interest Form to let me know the committees and issues facing Wisconsin lawyers you would like to contribute to.

Appointments to standing committees are for three years, and appointments to special committees are for one year. All committee appointments begin July 1, 2020 – the beginning of the State Bar’s next fiscal year.

The deadline for the submission of your interest form is April 15, 2020.

Please consider volunteering. The work you will accomplish and the satisfaction you will achieve will make you glad you did. I look forward to meeting and working with each of you.
