Jan. 4, 2017 – It’s a stepping stone to further your career, and a way to forge new connections with like-minded lawyers and to make a difference in your profession and the State Bar of Wisconsin.
Consider contributing your time and expertise as a Board of Governors representative or Division leader. Leaders of all experience levels are welcome and needed.
Candidates are needed for the following State Bar Board of Governors and Division leadership positions:
Run for a Position with the State Bar Board of Governors – Nomination Deadline is March 1
The Board of Governors is the State Bar's policymaking body. Governors serve two-year terms.
Districts 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 will elect governors in 2017. District 2 (Milwaukee) elects seven; District 9 (Dane) elects three; and all other districts elect one. See the district map.
To be considered for a seat on the Board of Governors, members must submit a petition to the State Bar by March 1, 2017, that is signed by 10 active members in their district.

State Bar election ballots will be mailed no later than April 14, 2017, and must be returned by April 28, 2017.
Persons elected will take office July 1, 2017.
Run for a Division Leadership Position – Nominations Due in January, February, and March
State Bar Divisions will soon select candidates to run in their 2017 elections. Consider running for a division officer or board of director position in your Division – the deadlines to sign up are fast approaching.
Nonresident Lawyers: Sign Up by Jan. 15 to Run for President-elect, Officer, or Board of Directors’ Positions
Members of the Nonresident Lawyers Division (NRLD) will choose a president-elect, who then serves as president, then past president, each for one-year terms.
The secretary and treasurer positions are also open for 2017, as are five two-year board of directors’ positions.

Please note that only active and emeritus-status NRLD members can run for these positions. Persons elected will take office July 1, 2017.
Young Lawyers Division Board and Officer Elections – Nominations Due Jan. 31 and March 1
Young Lawyers Division (YLD) positions available in 2017 are the president-elect, treasurer, and five board of directors’ positions, beginning July 1, 2017.
The treasurer position is a two-year term. The president-elect serves for one year, then serves as president and past president, each for one-year terms. The positions on the board of directors are two-year terms.
How to Apply to Run for a YLD Position: YLD members should send a statement of interest, resume, and a professional headshot photo to Lois Berning (lberning@wisbar.org) and Ben Roovers (broove@milwaukee.gov).
Limit statements of interest to 350 words for president-elect nominees and 250 words for all other nominees. The statements of interest will be published on WisBar.org, in the YLD newsletter Fresh Perspectives, and on the election ballots.
The deadline for nominations for the officer positions (president-elect and treasurer) is Jan. 31, 2017. The deadline for nominations for the open YLD board of directors’ positions is March 1, 2017.
Government Lawyers and Senior Lawyers: Nominations Due Feb. 1

Apply to Run for a Government Lawyers Division Position: Government Lawyers Division (GLD) members in 2017 will choose a president-elect for a one-year term (three-year commitment), a secretary and treasurer for two-year terms, and three division directors, also to serve two-year terms. The president-elect also serves as president for a one-year term and past president for a one-year term. GLD members are asked to email a resume, letter of interest, and a headshot photo to the GLD Nominating Committee, attn: Lois Berning, at lberning@wisbar.org, by Feb. 1, 2017.
Apply to Run for a Senior Lawyers Division Position: Members of the Senior Lawyers Division (SLD) are encouraged to run for an open board of directors' position for 2017. Each position is a two-year term.
To apply, SLD members should send an email to the SLD Nominating Committee, attn. Lois Berning, at lberning@wisbar.org, by Feb. 1, 2017.
To apply by mail for any position, send letters to the appropriate nominating committee, State Bar of Wisconsin, P.O. Box 7158, Madison, WI 53707-7158.
All positions begin July 1, 2017.
Division Elections: Are You Set Up to Receive Your Electronic Ballot?
This spring, the Nonresident, Government, and Young Lawyers Divisions will conduct their elections via email.
In April, you will receive ballots and bios for the Divisions in which you are eligible to vote. To assure your election-specific email arrives safely in your inbox, add this email address to your contacts as an approved sender: noreply@directvote.net.
Division election ballots will be emailed no later than April 14, 2017, and must be returned no later than April 28, 2017.
