State Bar recognizes judges Bartell and Ashley for exceptional
contributions to the justice system
March 16, 2011 – Retired Dane County Circuit Court Judge
Angela B. Bartell and Milwaukee County Circuit Court
Judge Carl Ashley will receive the State Bar’s
2011 Judicial Achievement Awards for their exceptional contributions to
Wisconsin’s justice system. The awards will be presented by the Bench and Bar
Committee during the Member Recognition and Networking Celebration
Thursday, June 9, at 6 p.m. at the Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells.
Judge Bartell was first appointed to the bench in
1978 and was elected by the people five times. She sat on the bench for
30 years and became Chief Judge of Dane County, then the Fifth Judicial
Circuit, from 1982 to 1988. Bartell will receive the Lifetime Jurist
Achievement Award. The award acknowledges the contributions of a jurist
who has served more than one full term as a circuit court judge and has
demonstrated outstanding, long-term judicial excellence and leadership
toward improving the quality of justice. Read

Judge
Ashley was elected to the Milwaukee County Circuit Court
without opposition in 1999, making him the first African-American judge
to be elected in Wisconsin without initially being appointed by a
governor. He was re-elected in 2005. Ashley will receive the Judge of
the Year Award, which recognizes an outstanding circuit court judge who
has improved the judicial system during the past year by his or her
leadership in advancing the quality of justice, judicial education, or
innovative programs. High ideals, personal character, judicial
competence, and community involvement are hallmarks of the award
recipient. Read

“These two outstanding jurists were nominated by their peers
because they have gone above and beyond the call of duty to improve the
quality of justice in our state,” adds Bench and Bar Committee
chair Kelli Sue Thompson. “The State Bar welcomes this opportunity
to recognize the essential work that the judiciary performs for this
state and the exceptional contributions these two judges have made
toward the betterment of the justice system for citizens not only in
Dane and Milwaukee counties but across Wisconsin.”
Awards celebration
The judicial awards are traditionally presented during the Annual
Convention. Starting this spring, the awards will be given out at the
State Bar annual meeting, held in conjunction with the Real Estate and
Business Law Institute. The awards will be presented on Thursday, June
9, at 6 p.m. at the Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells. This free event is open
to State Bar members and their friends and families who would like to
recognize the contributions of the award recipients.
In 2011, State Bar of Wisconsin PINNACLE is producing several multi-day
CLE institutes.
The institutes will enrich the learning and networking
opportunities of attorneys in the same or related practice areas by
delivering in-depth programming to members in designated practice
areas. More information about the June 9 - 10 institute will be
available soon.
