    State Bar recognizes judges Bartell and Ashley for exceptional contributions to the justice system

    March 16, 2011 – Retired Dane County Circuit Court Judge Angela B. Bartell and Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Carl Ashley will receive the State Bar’s 2011 Judicial Achievement Awards for their exceptional contributions to Wisconsin’s justice system. The awards will be presented by the Bench and Bar Committee during the Member Recognition and Networking Celebration Thursday, June 9, at 6 p.m. at the Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells.

    Angela BartellJudge Bartell was first appointed to the bench in 1978 and was elected by the people five times. She sat on the bench for 30 years and became Chief Judge of Dane County, then the Fifth Judicial Circuit, from 1982 to 1988. Bartell will receive the Lifetime Jurist Achievement Award. The award acknowledges the contributions of a jurist who has served more than one full term as a circuit court judge and has demonstrated outstanding, long-term judicial excellence and leadership toward improving the quality of justice.     Carl AshleyJudge Ashley was elected to the Milwaukee County Circuit Court without opposition in 1999, making him the first African-American judge to be elected in Wisconsin without initially being appointed by a governor. He was re-elected in 2005. Ashley will receive the Judge of the Year Award, which recognizes an outstanding circuit court judge who has improved the judicial system during the past year by his or her leadership in advancing the quality of justice, judicial education, or innovative programs.     “These two outstanding jurists were nominated by their peers because they have gone above and beyond the call of duty to improve the quality of justice in our state,” adds Bench and Bar Committee chair Kelli Sue Thompson. “The State Bar welcomes this opportunity to recognize the essential work that the judiciary performs for this state and the exceptional contributions these two judges have made toward the betterment of the justice system for citizens not only in Dane and Milwaukee counties but across Wisconsin.”

    Awards celebration

    The judicial awards are traditionally presented during the Annual Convention. Starting this spring, the awards will be given out at the State Bar annual meeting, held in conjunction with the Real Estate and Business Law Institute. The awards will be presented on Thursday, June 9, at 6 p.m. at the Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells. This free event is open to State Bar members and their friends and families who would like to recognize the contributions of the award recipients.

    In 2011, State Bar of Wisconsin PINNACLE is producing several multi-day CLE institutes. The institutes  will enrich the learning and networking opportunities of attorneys in the same or related practice areas by delivering in-depth programming to members in designated practice areas.
