Sept. 19, 2012 – The first seminar in the State Bar Practice411™ Breakfast & Business: Eggs, Ethics, and Answers series focuses on avoiding malpractice and the changing landscape of legal fees. The series begins its fall 2012 trek across the state in La Crosse on Oct. 31 and Minneapolis on Nov. 14.
First Session – Avoiding Malpractice With Effective Case Management
More than 40 percent of malpractice claims reported are the result of administrative errors or poor client communications. Do you have the systems in place to avoid missing deadlines or failing to file a document with the court on time? Featured speaker, Todd Scott examines the most common malpractice errors reported against attorneys, and the case management systems underwriters look for when assessing professional liability risks and the solutions for reducing malpractice exposure.
Scott, vice president of Risk Management for Minnesota Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company (MLM), oversees practice management services through online communication technology for MLM’s attorney clients in 17 states. He is a graduate of Hamline University School of Law where he is currently an adjunct professor of legal technology.
Second Session – Establishing Value Based Services: Don't Be Afraid of Alternative Billing
Clients have more choices than ever before from both competing lawyers and non-lawyer legal service providers. Alternative Fee Arrangements are gaining popularity, helping lawyers meet the challenges of the changing legal environment while delivering value and quality service to their clients when combined with billing and accounting best practices.
Nerino Petro, State Bar practice management advisor, discusses the changing landscape in the world of legal fees including how clients perceive value for legal services; understanding value and how to the Rules of Professional Conduct impact legal fees; using technology to improve effectiveness, efficiency, and value, and more..
Petro has 14 years of solo legal practice experience, and 12 years as CEO of CenCom Legal Technologies, which he founded to help lawyers and their staff deal with the practice management issues facing them.
