Let your colleagues know your “rules of engagement”. Write clear expectations of when you should be contacted and what constitutes an emergency.

Harvard Business Review suggests setting up a special email account just for vacations. Give the address to a few colleagues that might need to get a hold of you. That way you are not tempted to answer unimportant emails when you open your email to check for crisis situations.

Devote a specific amount of time each day to work. Get up early and take your laptop to a coffee shop and get important tasks accomplished all at once. Then, leave your laptop in the hotel room and be truly present during the rest of the day. Your friends and family will appreciate it, and you will be able to enjoy more of your vacation.

Find the right person to handle your outstanding work assignments while you’re gone, and reward that person. They will run interference for you, speak to your clients, and relay information on your behalf in meetings. Knowing you are well represented while you are gone helps you enjoy your vacation even more. Remember to take that person to lunch beforehand and bring them back a nice gift to show your appreciation. This is not the time for a shot glass or a token jar of sand.

Don’t waste your time hunting for the documents you need. Make sure you can quickly and easily access all necessary documents either on a USB or in the Cloud.

Still feeling guilty about being gone? Avoid the guilt by finding some business-related reading to do. Get a handle on law-related business development trends, digital marketing, or leadership and management trends.

Taking a Vacation When You’re Flying Solo

In addition to the advice above, here are five tips to help you disconnect from the office and enjoy your time away when you’re a solo practitioner.

Book early (really early if possible). Add it to your calendar so you can schedule around it.

Provide notice. This means to the court, opposing counsel, and your clients who have active files at the time of your vacation.

Have backup. Foster relationships with other attorneys you trust who can act on your behalf in an emergency. Arrange for them to be available during your absence, inform them of your current cases, and share the file locations with them.

Prepare your clients. Obtain their consent to share their name and information with your backup attorney.

Plan your return. Advise clients and colleagues that you will return a day or two later than you actually will so you have time to catch-up.
