If you only use Google© for simple web searches (and to check out the Google Doodles), then you’re missing out on lots of ways it can help you in your work and home life. Try these Google tips and tricks:

Unit conversions – Weren’t paying attention in math class? Just search “25 mm to inches” (or whatever measurement you’re working with) for a quick conversion.

Timer – Want to take a 15-minute break from work? Set a timer. Just type “15 minute timer” in the search box and go meditate, read a book, or do a crossword. Make sure to click on the sound button if needed. It works as a stop watch, too!

Nutritional value comparisons – Got a hankering for a treat and not sure if ice cream is better than gelato? Search “ice cream vs gelato” for a brief nutritional analysis.

Translation – Need help communicating with a client who has English as a second language? Google Translate provides written translations for more than 30 languages.

Public domain books – Google Books offers more than 1 million public domain books free of charge. Just type “Google Books” plus the title or author and then click on the book image to view the full text of the book for free.

Specific file types – Can’t find that PDF on estate planning you saw on the web two weeks ago? Try limiting the search by file type. Example: Estate Planning Filetype:PDF will bring up only PDFs on estate planning. This option also works well for Power Point (Filetype:PPT) or Microsoft Excel (Filetype:XLS).

Price points – Looking for a new office shredder, but have a budget? Search “shredder $50..$75” and get results only within that price range. (Skip the sponsored ads section at the top).

Google Alerts – Visit www.google.com/alerts and add a specific search term to get search results for new topics posted to the web once a week, once a day, or as they happen. Try it with “legal trends”, “Wisconsin Supreme Court”, your firm name, or a competitor’s name.

Just for Fun:

Bacon Number – Having an argument with your friends about how many steps of separation someone is from Kevin Bacon (their “Bacon Number”)? Type the name of the celebrity plus “Bacon Number” to get the answer.

Askew – Just type “Askew” in the search box and see what happens!

The internet has brought convenience, speed, accuracy, and accessibility. It’s transformed the world, creating job opportunities, expanding our knowledge, and revolutionizing the way we do business. At the same time, it has introduced new threats to our everyday lives as we rely on it to complete more tasks, both personal and professional. As our reliance on the internet continues to grow, learning to navigate it securely is critical.

According to a Kaspersky Labs study, 48% of exploit attacks in the first quarter of 2016 targeted web browsers. With that thought in mind, here are some ways you and your staff can surf the web more securely using the tools you already have in your browser’s security settings.

January 12, 1948

The United States Supreme Court releases its ruling in Sipuel v. Oklahoma State Board of Regents.

It started in 1946 when Ada Lois Sipuel was denied admission to the University of Oklahoma law school solely because of her race. At the time, state law required segregation of public educational institutions. There was only one state-funded law school in Oklahoma, and it only accepted white students. Sipuel sued for the right to attend. Her case made its way to the Supreme Court, which unanimously ruled on January 12, 1948 that the State of Oklahoma had to provide Sipuel with a legal education comparable to white students.1

In response, the State Regents for Higher Education created Langston University School of Law in just a few days. This “separate but equal” school was housed in the state Capitol in Oklahoma City with three lawyers serving part-time as faculty. Sipuel and other African-Americans refused to attend, choosing once again to go to court.2

In 1949, Sipuel was finally able to enter the law school of her choice. She graduated from OU Law in 1951 and began practicing law. In 1992, she was appointed to the Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma.3
