<p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;">As January approaches, many of us start thinking about our New Year’s resolutions. Because they are so often abandoned, it can be easy to think that resolutions aren’t important. A quarter of Americans don’t stick to their resolutions for more than a week, and more than half of us can’t keep a resolution for more than 6 months.1 </p>
<p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;">When done right, resolutions can be very beneficial. People who explicitly make resolutions are ten times more likely to attain their goals than people who don't follow the tradition.2</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;">Resolve to make a resolution you can actually keep using the SMART technique.3 An effective, realistic resolution should be:</p>
<ul style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;">
<li><strong>Specific</strong> – Clearly define what it is you want to do. Perhaps you want to get in better shape this year. Instead of saying “I want to exercise more in 2017” try “In 2017, I will do 30 minutes of walking 5 days a week over my lunch hour.” </li><li><strong>Measurable</strong> – Tracking your progress towards a goal keeps you accountable. Create a resolution that includes time frames, dates, dollar amounts, credits, or something else you can measure. For example, “I will earn 3 CLE credits in a practice management topic in 2017.” </li><li><strong>Achievable</strong> – Setting an unrealistic goal will only leave you feeling discouraged. Be honest with yourself about how much time and energy you can devote to your resolution. A resolution such as “I will listen to one new podcast episode every day” could be tough with a busy schedule, but “I will listen to one new podcast episode every week” is more realistic.
</li><li><strong>Relevant</strong> – Is the resolution going to give you the results you want? Is it important to you? The best resolutions align with the direction and goals you have for your life. </li><li><strong>Time-bound</strong> – At work, deadlines help you stay on track. The same holds true for resolutions. Incorporate a timeframe in your resolution, such as “I will clean out my old file cabinet by the end of the first quarter in 2017.”</li></ul>
<p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 10px;">Need some resolution inspiration? Here are some ideas from HubSpot4 and <em>Inc.</em> magazine5 to get you started:</p>
