Calling All Criminal Defense Attorneys:
The State Public Defender Needs You!

If you're interested in providing low-cost legal representation but civil legal aid isn't your wheelhouse, then consider providing “low-bono" with the Wisconsin State Public Defender (SPD)!

SPD is looking for contract attorneys to represent clients in trial and appellate matters statewide. Private bar attorneys are vital partners in ensuring clients' constitutional rights are protected and Wisconsin's justice system functions appropriately. SPD offers multiple trainings throughout the year for private bar attorneys and the list of upcoming trainings are available on their website.

The flexible SPD case assignment system can be tailored to your needs. Whether you're an experienced attorney looking to learn a new skill or a young litigator seeking courtroom experience, SPD will work to find trial and/or appellate cases that match your preferences. In addition to felony and misdemeanor cases, other available case types include juvenile, mental health, termination of parental rights, and probation revocations.
