    Angela Rust, Marquette 2007 magna cum laude, has joined Michael Best as senior counsel to the firm’s Healthcare Group, serving as an advisor, outside general counsel, and legal strategist for healthcare companies such as provider-owned clinics, ambulatory surgery centers, managed service organizations, and provider networks. Her experience spans multiple states, where she has structured and implemented bundled payment programs, employer-sponsored clinics, collaborative agreements among healthcare providers, and direct contracts between providers and self-funded employers. Rust has taught as adjunct faculty for the Medical College of Wisconsin and at Marian University in Fond du Lac.

Hammett, U.W. 2007 cum laude, is a shareholder in the Insurance Coverage and Risk Management Section in the Milwaukee office and focuses on insurance coverage matters, including advising insurers on first-party property, third-party commercial general liability, professional liability, and bad faith claims.

Lundgren, Marquette 2025, is an associate in the Litigation & Risk Management Section in the Milwaukee office and focuses on mass tort and toxic tort matters. Ryan R. Simatic, William Mitchell 2011 magna cum laude, is a shareholder in the Real Estate Section in the Eau Claire office and focuses on eminent domain. He also has significant experience with a wide range of real estate disputes involving easements, boundaries, adverse possession, land use and zoning, property tax valuation, and property tax exemptions.

    Reilly C. KulasAlexis J. WitteThe firm’s Trusts and Estates Section has expanded with the addition of Reilly C. Kulas, U.W. 2023, Alexis J. Witte, Marquette 2023, and Ashley E. Ferus, a tax specialist-paralegal and enrolled agent of the IRS.     Appointments, Elections

    Steven (Steve) J. KruegerSteven (Steve) J. Krueger, Marquette 2007, of the Law Firm of Conway, Olejniczak & Jerry S.C., was recently elected treasurer of the State Bar of Wisconsin. The role involves careful stewardship of member dues and earned revenue, ensuring the responsible use of funds in support of legal education, public services, and the advancement of the justice system.

    Krueger focuses his law practice on representing a broad range of clients on general business matters, real estate, collections, and creditor-debtor law.

    Don WruckDon Wruck, Valparaiso 1999, has joined the Carthage College board of trustees. Wruck is founding partner of Wruck Paupore PC, Dyer, Ind., which represents individuals with serious personal injuries and victims of nursing home abuse. He is also general counsel for the Lake County CASA program, representing children who have been abused and neglected by their families.

    The Hon. Thomas Hruz, Marquette 2002, Wisconsin Court of Appeals District III, Wausau, and Nathan Petrashek, Marquette 2009, district staff attorney for District II of the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, Waukesha, are authors of the new book Standards of Appellate Review in Wisconsin (State Bar of Wis. 2025).

    Dennis R. McBride, New York Univ. 1980, has authored A City on the Edge: Pandemic, Protest, and Polarization (Indiana University Press 2025). McBride, the mayor of Wauwatosa, wrote about the legal, political, and personal challenges that he and other American mayors faced in 2020 and how the events of that year are still reverberating in the nation’s economy, politics, and psyche.

    Awards, Degrees, Honors

    The Hon. Scott Corbett, North Dakota 1985, Marathon County Circuit Court, Wausau, received an Honorable Mention award for crime victim service from the Wisconsin Victim Witness Professional Association in May. Judge Corbett was commended for, among other things, his attention to the needs of crime victims and willingness to adapt courtroom procedures to reduce trauma.

    Marc HammerThe Wisconsin Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) has selected the Hon. Marc Hammer, Missouri 1989, Brown County Circuit Court, to receive its Trial Judge of the Year award. In nominating Judge Hammer, lawyers from “both sides of the aisle” noted his kindness and evenhandedness, respect toward litigants, and thoughtfulness in his rulings, and that it is a joy to be in his courtroom. Judge Hammer will also preside over the mock trial that ABOTA and the State Bar of Wisconsin conduct at the 35th Annual Institute of Trial Practice, to be held on Nov. 13, 2025.

    Samantha PepprockSamantha Pepprock, Cooley Law School 2012, senior counsel at ManpowerGroup in Milwaukee, has been certified as a Negotiation Professional by the American Negotiation Institute.

    The University of Wisconsin Law Library has received the Excellence in Community Engagement Award from the American Association of Law Libraries. The law library’s Generative AI Education Initiative was recognized for its extensive outreach and educational programming on the ethical and effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education and legal practice, providing tailored instruction to students, attorneys, judges, librarians, faculty, administrators, and members of the public. Highlights of the initiative include delivering 20 educational sessions in 2024 reaching over 1,100 people; being on track to exceed that number in 2025, beginning with 700 attendees at the Winter Ethics Seminar; and regularly contributing articles about AI to State Bar of Wisconsin publications.
