Introducing LOMAP: A Source for Law Practice Management Guidance

More help with your technology questions is on the way. This summer, the State Bar will launch the Law Office Management Assistance Program (LOMAP), which will provide information and support related to diverse areas of law office management - including technology, business planning, personnel, facilities and operations management, and more.

LOMAP is geared primarily to attorneys in solo practice and small firms but aims to help attorneys in various types of practice. For instance, "We're working with government lawyers," says Wausau attorney William Hess, chair of the LOMAP Committee. "They're being asked to run their offices more efficiently and to track the time of people working in their offices. They have to develop systems to be more efficient. So they're an interested party."

Consulting and mentoring will be key components of LOMAP. "We're developing a group of volunteer consultants," Hess says, "including attorneys who are savvy in technology issues."

In addition, LOMAP will assemble a corps of paid consultants, who will offer free initial consultations and then reduced fees for additional services to Bar members. LOMAP also will draw up a list of vendors who will be available to consult with attorneys.

Other key products include educational programs and materials, and extensive information will be available on the LOMAP pages of the Bar's redesigned Web site, WisBar, which launched in early April. Attorneys who have no Web access will be able to receive information by mail and phone.

"In putting in place a cadre of high-tech people for LOMAP," Hess says, "the Bar certainly can be a clearinghouse" for providing diverse types of assistance.
