Jill Gilbert, DePaul 1984, has authored The 
Entrepreneur's Guide to Patents, Copyrights, Trademarks, Trade Secrets 
and Licensing (Penguin/Putnam Press). She is completing a master's 
degree in computer science at Marquette University and is admitted to 
practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
Lawrence G. Albrecht, Valparaiso 1973, presented a 
paper entitled "Post-September 11 Lessons Learned: Enforcement of Human 
Rights in the U.S. and Comparative Analysis," at the Rulci/Latcrit 
Colloquium on International Law and Comparative Law and Constitutional 
Law and Theory at the University of Western Cape Law Faculty, South 
Africa, in August. He is with First, Blondis, Albrecht & Novotnak 
S.C., Milwaukee.
The Hon. James A. Wynn Jr., Marquette 1979, spoke at 
the annual convention of the National Council of Appellate Staff 
Attorneys in July on judicial independence issues. He is a judge on the 
North Carolina Court of Appeals.
Bradden C. Backer, U.W. 1981, and Robert K. 
Sholl, Chicago 1981, have coauthored the revised edition of 
Hiring and Firing in Wisconsin (State Bar of Wisconsin CLE 
Books, 3d ed. 2004). Backer is with Friebert Finerty & St. John

Pro Bono, Public Service
The Volunteer Lawyers Project of Legal Action of Wisconsin Inc. has 
recognized several attorneys with Quarles & Brady LLP who have 
provided more than 600 hours of pro bono service to victims of domestic 
abuse and harassment since April 2003. Rachel 
Schneider, U.W. 1995, leads the team of volunteers, which 
includes Shawn Crawford, Marquette 2000; 
Cristina Hernandez-Malaby, Harvard 1995; Nate 
Jamison, Michigan 2000; Jim Krogmeier, Iowa 
2002; Autumn Kruse, U.W. 2002; Katie 
Perhach, Marquette 2000; Rob Pluta, Marquette 
2001; and Sean Scullen, U.W. 1999. The attorneys 
explain the requirements and process for seeking restraining orders, 
assist victims in completing petitions, and accompany victims to final 
hearings.
Attorneys and staff from Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren 
S.C. and The Schroeder Group S.C., Attorneys at 
Law spearheaded a golf event that raised $6,800 for the MACC 
Fund, Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer Inc. Eighty golfers 
participated in the Max-Fly Open, held in July.
Awards, Degrees, Honors
Alfred M. Boll, U.W. 1993, received a Doctor of 
Juridical Studies (SJD) degree from the University of Sydney (Australia) 
in May. He is a political officer with the U.S. Department of State at 
the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal.
Charles Curtis, Chicago 1982, and John 
Skilton, U.W. 1969, have received the Richard E. Guggenhime Pro 
Bono Award from Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe LLP. Curtis and 
Skilton are shareholders with the firm, dividing their time between the 
Madison and Washington, D.C. offices. Curtis was recognized for his 
efforts involving the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002, also known 
as the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform legislation. Skilton was 
recognized for his work with the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights 
Under Law, specifically for work on U.S. Supreme Court cases related to 
affirmative action policy at the University of Michigan.
Carlton D. Stansbury, Iowa 1990 with distinction, 
has become a fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He 
is a shareholder with Burbach & Stansbury S.C., Milwaukee, focusing 
on family law, collaborative law, paternity, mediation, and appellate 
work.
The Hon. William C. Stewart Jr., William Mitchell 
1988, received the Bert Grover Child Advocacy Award from the Wisconsin 
Association of School District Administrators in Green Bay in May. 
Stewart, who sits on the Dunn County circuit court, was honored for his 
work with the Dunn County Truancy Court Program, which he founded.
The Hon. Joseph M. Troy, U.W. 1980, received the 
Trial Judge of the Year award from the American Board of Trial Advocates 
(ABOTA) in Madison in May. He sits on the Outagamie County circuit court 
and is chief judge of the Eighth Judicial District.
