Personal Mentions
In October Chief Justice Shirley S. Abrahamson received the Rose
Award from St. Rose Residence as it celebrated the 150th anniversary of
its founding. St. Rose Residence is the oldest child care institution and
social service agency in Wisconsin. Chief Justice Abrahamson was honored
for her leadership in the Wisconsin Supreme Court's initiative entitled
"Wisconsin Families, Children and Justice."
Kevin D. Anderson, Michigan 1981, has rejoined Foley & Lardner
as a partner in its Chicago office, practicing primarily in federal income
tax law. He recently left the U.S. Treasury Department, where he served
as an associate tax legislative counsel and was actively involved in developing
legislation and regulatory guidance in S and C corporation taxation, cost
recovery, alternative minimum tax, and tax accounting.
William C. Bertrand Jr., U.W. 1989, has relocated to the new corporate
headquarters established for Pharmacia & Upjohn in Bridgewater, N.J.
He will continue to practice as litigation counsel in product liability
and insurance-related matters.
F. Anthony Brewster, U.W. 1955, has established his own law office
at Brewster Law Office, P.O. Box 55418, Madison, Wis.
Stephen Brigham, U.W. 1998, has become an associate of von Briesen,
Purtell & Roper S.C., Milwaukee, in its business practice group. He
will practice in business formation, general corporate law and transactional
matters, and related tax issues.
Dennis P. Coffey, U.W. 1972, of Coffey & Coffey Ltd., Milwaukee,
has been elected president-elect of the American Board of Criminal Lawyers
(ABCL). Founded in 1978, the ABCL works to preserve the adversary system
of justice and ensure justice and due process for persons accused of crime.
Domingo G. Cruz, Chicago 1998, has become an associate of Godfrey
& Kahn S.C., Milwaukee, on the real estate practice team.
John W. Daniels Jr., Harvard 1974, a partner and member of the
management committee at Quarles & Brady, Milwaukee, has been elected
national president-elect of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers
(ACREL). He served this past year as the national vice president, and the
prior year as national treasurer of ACREL. Daniels practices in real estate,
corporate law, and commercial finance.
Davis & Kuelthau S.C. was selected by a multinational organization,
ADP, to present a seminar addressing compliance with wage and hour laws.
The seminar was conducted in 27 states this fall. Shawn D. Guse,
U.W. 1995, and Mary L. Hubacher, U.W. 1991, presented "Complying
with Wage and Hour Issues" in Sheboygan earlier this month.
Sarah J. Elliott, U.W. 1984, a shareholder with von Briesen, Purtell
& Roper S.C., Milwaukee, has been appointed by the firm's board of directors
to be the new health practice group leader. She will lead a team of 30 health-care
attorneys. Elliott's practice focuses on physician relations, labor and
employment, risk management, and patient care issues in the health-care
industry.
Mark A. Ruppelt and James Gatzke, both Marquette 1994 graduates,
have opened Gatzke & Ruppelt S.C., a Milwaukee-area law firm
with offices in Whitefish Bay and New Berlin. The attorneys are general
practitioners, concentrating in criminal and traffic law, and personal injury.
David J. Hanus, Drake 1996 with honors, and Werner Erich Scherr,
Marquette 1998, have joined Hannan, Siesennop & Sullivan in Milwaukee.
Johannah K. Hebl, Hamline 1998, has joined Hesslink Law Offices
S.C., Verona, as an associate.
Gregg M. Herman, U.W. 1977, has been named as contributing editor
in matrimonial practice to FairShare, a matrimonial law monthly,
published by Aspen Law and Business, New York City. Herman is a shareholder
in Loeb & Herman S.C., Milwaukee, which practices exclusively in family
law. He is a former chair of the State Bar Family Law Section and currently
is president of the Milwaukee Bar Association.
Wm. Pharis Horton, Georgetown 1963, has relocated the Horton
Law Office to 222 N. Midvale Blvd., Suite 7, Madison.
John J. Kalter, Minnesota 1994, has joined Godfrey & Kahn
S.C., Milwaukee, as an associate on the labor and employment practice team.
He previously was with Michael Best & Friedrich LLP.
Liza Kessler, U.W. 1997, has taken a leave of absence from her
position as an associate with the Jeff Scott Olson Law Firm to serve as
the staff attorney for the Educational Fund to End Handgun Violence and
the National Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, located in Washington, D.C.
She will be coordinating the national firearms litigation clearinghouse.
Kessler also will conduct educational programs for attorneys and for victims
of gun violence, and advocate for better federal and state laws in these
areas.
The Kiwanis Club of Milwaukee recently installed its new officers and
directors, among them: Harvey Kurtz, Chicago 1975, as president-elect;
John Keck, U.W. 1957, as secretary; and Michael Gehl, U.W.
1974, as treasurer; and Eric Robinson, U.W. 1996, and Michael
Pierski, Marquette 1990, as directors.
Aurene Martin, U.W. 1993, has become director of congressional
and public affairs of the National Indian Gaming Commission's Washington,
D.C., central office. The Commission is an agency of the Department of Interior.
Martin formerly is of the Oneida of Wisconsin's legal department.
Stephen E. Mays, Thomas M. Cooley 1995, has joined Thomas, Kelly,
Habermehl & Wood S.C. The firm's new name is Thomas, Kelly, Habermehl
& Mays S.C. The firm offices remain at 145 W. Wilson St., Madison.
Meissner Tierney Fisher & Nichols S.C. is celebrating its
150th anniversary of continuous service. The Milwaukee firm serves clients
on the local, state, and national levels in tax and environmental law, and
business and corporate organization and governance.
Daniel P. Merline, Marquette 1998, has joined Beck Law Office
S.C. in Hartford. Merline is a former business owner/builder and City of
Milwaukee police officer. He will practice in divorce/family law, tax planning,
construction defect litigation, and real estate development.
The Milwaukee Lawyers Chapter of the Federalist Society for Law and Public
Policy Studies has updated its officers and named a board of directors.
James T. Barry III, Chicago 1989, will serve as cochair, along with
Michael B. Brennan, Northwestern 1989. Brennan will serve as president;
Donald A. Daugherty Jr., Northwestern 1990, as vice president; and
David W. Simon, U.C.-Berkeley 1994, as secretary-treasurer. Named
to the board of directors are Terrence Berres, Larry J. Bonney, Karl
Dahlen, Daniel Gentges, Gordon P. Giampietro, Michael E. Hartmann, Daniel
Kelly, Paul Langer, Stephen D. Rogers, Theodore R. Rolfs, and David
Tolan.
Joseph C. Mrazek, Georgetown 1997, has been appointed an assistant
state public defender in the Racine office, representing indigent defendants
in misdemeanor cases.
Gerald M. O'Brien, U.W. 1959, has been board certified as a civil
trial advocate through the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He is a partner
in the Stevens Point law firm of Anderson, Shannon, O'Brien, Rice &
Bertz.
Barbara H. Patterson, U.W. 1974, recently joined Advanced Healthcare
S.C., Milwaukee, as vice president of human resources. Advanced Healthcare
is one of the largest multi-site physician-owned group medical practices
in southeastern Wisconsin.
Curtis A. Paulsen, Marquette 1985 cum laude, a shareholder in
the Milwaukee office of Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C., has been appointed
the Wisconsin chair of the newly formed Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)
Section of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals Bar Association. The section
oversees all ADR projects within the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Paulsen
also chairs the Milwaukee Bar Association ADR Section. Paulsen concentrates
his practice in litigation, ADR, construction and public contracts law,
and food regulation law.
Five attorneys have been promoted to partner status within Quarles &
Brady: Margaret C. Kelsey, Georgetown 1989, practices in product
liability defense litigation; Sally C. Merrell, Virginia 1980, practices
in estate planning and trusts; Dana L. O'Brien, Northwestern 1984,

practice in business, commercial litigation, and employment law.
Christopher W. Rose, John Marshall 1997, has become a member of
the Kenosha firm of Rose & Rose.
Judge Charles B. Schudson was awarded the 1998 Human Rights Leadership
Award by Freedom Magazine. One of 15 recipients nationally, Judge
Schudson was honored for his efforts on behalf of women, children, and the
elderly.
John B. Stadler, U.W. 1988, has joined West Group in Deerfield,
Ill., as an attorney editor. He formerly was with American Family Insurance
Group in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Stupar & Schuster S.C., Milwaukee, has changed its name to Stupar,
Schuster & Cooper S.C. The shareholders in the organization are
Michael P. Stupar, Jeffrey S. Schuster, Herbert Levine, Mark S. Stern and
Jeffrey A. Cooper. Aimée S. Walsh (formerly St. Louis), Oregon
1995, and Todd R. Korb, U.W. 1996, have joined the law firm as associates.
Harvey Jay Goldstein, Marquette 1977, has become of counsel with
the firm. He previously was a sole practitioner.
Gary E. Sherman, U.W. 1973, was elected to serve as Representative
for the 74th Assembly District in the Wisconsin Assembly. The 74th district
includes all of Ashland, Sawyer, and Iron counties and most of Bayfield
County. He will continue his private law practice at Fairview Law Office
in Port Wing. Sherman is a State Bar past president.
Thomas D. Sykes, Ohio State 1979, recently joined, as a partner,
the Washington, D.C., firm of Scribner, Hall & Thompson LLP. The firm
practices in federal tax matters, chiefly representing large corporate groups
in the financial services and insurance industries. Sykes formerly was with
the U.S. Department of Justice-Tax Division, serving most recently as an
assistant chief of the Division's Court of Federal Claims Section. He also
served as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin
and the Barron County DA.
Tami L. Van Straten, Marquette 1997, has joined the Appleton law
firm of Sigman, Janssen, Stack, Wenning & Wilson. Van Straten previously
clerked for the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
Randall D. Crocker, Marquette 1979, Robert J. Loots, Iowa
1958, and Clay R. Williams, Michigan 1960,all shareholders
with von Briesen, Purtell & Roper S.C., Milwaukee, are listed in the
1999-2000 edition of The Best Lawyers in America. Crocker leads the
firm's banking, bankruptcy, and creditor's rights practice group. He also
practices in commercial transactions and litigation. Loots practices in
corporate, securities, and trust and estate law, particularly in business
planning and ownership succession planning. He chaired a special committee
to study and recommend changes that were enacted into law dealing with hostile
take-over attempts in Wisconsin. Williams practices in corporation, business,
and securities law.
David T. Wilk has been elected treasurer of the Kenosha County
Bar Association, not S. Michael Wilk.
