New Hires, Promotions, Partners
Nicole Marklein Bacher, U.W. 2008, has been named a partner at Cross, Jenks, Mercer & Maffei, Baraboo, and continues to focus on civil litigation, insurance defense, and employment law.
John Matthew Linstroth, U.W. 2010, and Caroline E. Poduch, U.W. 2011, have joined Balisle & Roberson S.C., Madison, as associates. Linstroth focuses on family law matters involving privately held business interests. Poduch focuses on divorces of business owners, estate planning, and probate.
The Hon. Edward E. Leineweber, U.W. 1976, formerly a circuit court judge, has joined Bell, Moore & Richter S.C., Madison, as of counsel. He concentrates in aviation, business, agriculture, and real estate matters and civil litigation, including personal injury. Tara L. Nielsen, U.W. 2011, has joined the firm as an associate and concentrates in employment and labor law.
Kristine Cherek, U.W. 1997, has joined the faculty of Florida Coastal School of Law, Jacksonville. She remains special counsel to Godfrey & Kahn S.C., Milwaukee.
Jordan Corning, U.W. 2011 cum laude, has joined Stafford Rosenbaum LLP as an associate in the Madison office and focuses on business law, employment and labor law, litigation, and municipal law.
Joshua Czuta, Marquette 2006, has been named director of human resources at Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon. He formerly was with Murn & Martin.
Steven Conway, Stetson 1996, and Joe Miotke, Marquette 1999, have joined DeWitt Ross & Stevens S.C. Conway is with the Madison office and focuses on health care, litigation, and governmental relations. Miotke focuses on intellectual property in the metropolitan Milwaukee office.
Virginia G. Essandoh, John Marshall 1999, has been promoted to chief diversity officer at Ballard Spahr LLP, Philadelphia. She previously was director of diversity.
John H. Fisher II, U.W. 1985, has joined the Wausau office of Ruder Ware LLSC and is a member of the health-care focus team.
Sarah L. Fowles, U.W. 2008 cum laude, has joined the Milwaukee office of Quarles & Brady LLP as an associate in the employee benefits and executive compensation group.
Andrew J. Guzikowski, U.W. 1982 cum laude, has joined the Milwaukee office of von Briesen & Roper s.c., as a shareholder and chairs the firm’s newly formed public finance section, which serves banks and other businesses, hospitals and health-care systems, municipalities, and school districts in their public finance, funding, and other tax-exempt financing needs.
Steven J. Haverty, Marquette 1970, has become of counsel to Duxstad & Bestul S.C. and focuses on estate planning and probate, real estate, and business transactions. The firm has relocated its Lafayette County office to 213 Main St., Darlington.
Michele Miller Hayes, U.W. 1991, has joined SVA Certified Public Accountants S.C., Madison, as corporate counsel. She previously was with the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing.
Heather E. Hazelwood, U.W. 2011, has joined Hurley, Burish & Stanton S.C., Madison, in the transactional and personal services area and focuses in estate planning, family law, and advising business, nonprofit, and charitable organizations.
Michael E. Hirsch, U.W. 1985, has joined the Milwaukee office of Michael Best & Friedrich LLP as a staff attorney in the transactional practice group, focusing in eminent domain, condemnation, and property matters. He previously was with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
Jason Knutson, U.W. 2000, has joined Habush Habush & Rottier S.C. as a shareholder in the Madison office.
Lindsey A. Kraig, Florida Coastal 2009, has joined Buelow Vetter Buikema Olson & Vliet LLC, Waukesha, and focuses on labor and employment law and school law.
Joseph F. LaDien, Marquette 2008, has joined the Watertown office of Pitman, Kyle, Sicula & Dentice S.C. and practices personal injury law and general litigation.

Mitchell S. Moser, Northwestern 1991, has been named the 2012 general campaign chair of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. He is with the Milwaukee of Quarles & Brady LLP and concentrates in product liability and commercial litigation.
Bruce T. Block, Boston Univ. 1979, and Kevin J. Howley, Illinois 1984, have been reelected to the board of Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c. Block is a shareholder and cochair of the real estate practice, and Howley is a shareholder in the business law and international practices and the product distribution and franchise team, both in the Milwaukee office.
Todd G. Smith, U.W. 1996, has been named chair of the State Bar’s Appellate Practice Section. He is a shareholder with the Milwaukee office of Godfrey & Kahn S.C. and focuses on insurance-coverage and ERISA litigation.

Kim Marie Wynn, Harvard 1985 cum laude, has been elected to the board of Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C. She is a shareholder in the Milwaukee office and practices in the finance and real estate groups. Bruce G. Arnold, Michigan 1981 cum laude, and Nathan A. Fishbach, Villanova 1977, both shareholders in the Milwaukee office, have been reelected to the board. Arnold, the firm’s managing director, concentrates in health-care law. Fishbach focuses on complex civil and white-collar crime compliance issues.

Jennifer Carleton, U.W. 1996, authored “Indian Gaming: The Multi-Jurisdictional Licensing Dilemma,” a chapter in Inside the Minds: Emerging Issues in Tribal-State Relations (2011). She is a shareholder with Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, Las Vegas, and concentrates on gaming regulatory matters.
The Hon. Charles B. Schudson, U.W. 1974, a Wisconsin reserve judge emeritus, presented “Brains and Biases/Bringing Emotional Intelligence to America’s Courts” at the joint national convention of the National Association for Court Management and the National Association of State Judicial Educators in Las Vegas in July.
Awards, Degrees, Honors
The Hon. David A. Baker, Virginia 1976, received the 2011 William M. Hoeveler Judicial Award at the annual meeting of the Florida Bar. The award recognizes a judge who best exemplifies strength of character, service, and competence as a jurist, lawyer, and public servant. Baker is a U.S. magistrate judge for the Middle District of Florida, Orlando.
State Bar president James M. Brennan, Marquette 1976, and State Bar law practice management advisor Nerino Petro Jr., Northern Illinois 1988, have been named to the inaugural Fastcase 50, a group of “interesting, provocative, and courageous” leaders in law and legal technology. Brennan, also with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, was recognized for his dedication to pro bono and access-to-justice activities. Petro was recognized for his contributions to legal technology and practice management.
Beth L. Cox, U.W. 1998 cum laude, received the 2011 Outstanding Elected Official award from the Wisconsin Clearinghouse for Prevention Resources at its annual conference in June. She is the village of Oregon municipal judge and proprietor of Cox Law Office LLC, Oregon.
Timothy E. Hawks, Iowa 1977, has been elected a fellow in the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. He is with the Milwaukee office of Hawks & Quindel S.C.
Gregg Herman, U.W. 1977, has been recertified as a specialist in family law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy for 2011 to 2016. He is with Loeb & Herman S.C., Milwaukee.
Pro Bono, Public Service
Participants in the 2011 Chicago Ragnar Relay included Christina Severin, Loyola-Chicago 2008, and Carrie Turner, Marquette 2000, who ran with the Hall, Render, Killian, Heath & Lyman team. Severin and Turner are with the firm’s Milwaukee office. Proceeds of the run, which goes from Madison to Chicago, went to Back on my Feet, a nonprofit organization that assists homeless people.
