Levine Wins State Bar President-elect Title
MADISON, April 25, 2005 - Madison attorney
Steve Levine has officially been named president-elect of the State Bar
of Wisconsin after winning a statewide election of Wisconsin
lawyers. Levine will serve as President-elect for one year
beginning July 1, 2005. He will then take office as president of
the bar for a one-year term July 1, 2006.
Levine defeated Wausau attorney Dean Dietrich and La Crosse attorney
G. Jeffrey George. He will succeed Milwaukee attorney D. Michael
Guerin as president. Guerin's term as president runs from
July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2006.
"I feel grateful and honored to have been chosen by my fellow
lawyers as State Bar President," said President-elect
Levine. "The election results seem to indicate that
Wisconsin lawyers want some important changes in the bar and the legal
profession, and over the next three years I'll do my best to help
bring about those changes."
Levine has served two terms on the State Bar Board of Governors and
is a past chair of the State Bar Committee on Administration of Justice
and the Judiciary. He currently serves as a member of the State
Bar Board of Bar Examiners Review Committee and the State Bar
Administrative, Appellate and Energy Law Sections.
In 1973 he graduated from Georgetown University Law School and
received a Master of Laws degree from the University of Wisconsin in
1984. He presently works as Assistant General Counsel for the
Public Service Commission of Wisconsin.
He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Dane County
Bar Association and is admitted to practice in the Western District of
Wisconsin, the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme
Court. His work focuses on energy, telecommunications and water
and sewer law. He has presented Continuing Legal Education
programs on administrative law and public utility law. He has
served two terms on the State Bar Board of Governors and has
participated on several State Bar Committees including the Committee on
Administration of Justice and the Judiciary and the Board of Bar
Examiners Review Committee.
The State Bar of Wisconsin elections are held annually in
April. President-elect Levine will be sworn in on Thursday, May 5
at during the State Bar's Annual Convention at the Midwest Airlines
Center in Milwaukee.
The State Bar of Wisconsin is the mandatory professional association,
created by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, for attorneys who hold a
Wisconsin law license. With more than 21,000 members, the State Bar aids
the courts in improving the administration of justice, provides
continuing legal education for its members to help them maintain their
expertise, and assists Wisconsin lawyers in carrying out community
service initiatives to educate the public about the legal system and the
value of lawyers.
