Judge Myron L. Gordon earns "Lifetime Jurist Achievement" award
MADISON, February 27, 2002 - Retired Judge Myron L.
Gordon of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District has been
selected for the State Bar of Wisconsin's 2001 Lifetime Jurist
Achievement Award. The award will be presented at the State Bar Annual
Convention on May 17 at the Monona Terrace Convention Center in
Madison.
"The Wisconsin judiciary is fortunate to have high-caliber
judges like Myron Gordon serving our courts," said Attorney Nicholas
Casper, chair of the Bench /Bar Committee. "Judge Gordon has been called
a 'top-grade jurist', 'absolutely impartial' and 'a judge who could see
the human factor.' We are honored to recognize him for this most
deserving award."
The Bench/Bar Committee of the State Bar of Wisconsin annually
recognizes outstanding judges with its 'Judge of the Year' and 'Lifetime
Jurist Achievement' awards. Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Maxine
A. White was named Judge of the Year. This year, the committee selected
two judges for the Lifetime Jurist Achievement award. Hon. Edwin C.
Dahlberg (Ret.) of Rock County was also chosen.
Gordon earned his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1942. He served
as a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserves during World War II and was
in private law practice in Milwaukee. In January 1950, at age 31, he
took office as the youngest judge in Milwaukee County, having defeated a
longtime incumbent. He served in the county civil court and later the
circuit court until 1961, when elected to the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
He served on the Supreme Court until 1967, when President Lyndon B.
Johnson appointed him as a federal district court judge for the Eastern
District of Wisconsin. Gordon served as the senior judge until his
retirement in January 2001.
"I believe that Judge Gordon's record of more than 50 years of
continuous service as one of Wisconsin's finest jurists in both our
state and federal courts demonstrates that he is an ideal candidate for
the Lifetime Jurist Achievement Award - indeed the benchmark against
which other nominees might be compared," wrote Chief Judge J.P.
Stadtmueller of the Eastern District Court in his letter of
nomination.
The Lifetime Jurist Achievement Award recognizes a jurist with at least
12 years' experience as a trial judge who has demonstrated outstanding,
long-term judicial service during his or her years as a sitting judge.
Past recipients include Hon. John A. Decker, Hon. Patrick T. Sheedy,
Hon. Peter G. Pappas, Hon. Mark J. Farnum, and Hon. P. Charles
Jones.
