Business Law Section of State Bar wins award
June 13, 2000 - The State Bar of Wisconsin's
Business Law Section was honored earlier this month by the U.S. Small
Business Administration with Wisconsin's 2000 Small Business Legal
Assistance of the Year Award. The honor is in recognition of the
section's contributions to the state's economic development.
The section received the award for its Business Assistance Program
and Nonprofit Business Assistance Program, both of which provide up to
two free hours of introductory counseling to small businesses and
qualifying nonprofit organizations to help with such typical issues as
start up operations and employment law issues. The two programs handled
a total of nearly 300 referrals in 1999 and more than 150 already in
2000.
"I am gratified that more than 250 members of the bar's Business Law
Section volunteered their time to give something back to the community
through their pro bono service to small business," said Conrad Goodkind,
Business Law Section chair.
The Business Assistance Program began in 1995 and includes nearly 200
volunteer lawyers, while the Nonprofit Business Assistance Program began
in 1998, and boasts more than 60 volunteer lawyers. Both programs
combined have helped more than 2,500 individuals.
