Rhinelander finishes 14th in national mock trial tournament
May 17, 2000 - The mock trial team from Rhinelander
High School finished 14th this past weekend in the National High School
Mock Trial Tournament in Columbia, South Carolina.
The Rhinelander team won the Wisconsin High School Mock Trial
Tournament, sponsored by the State Bar of Wisconsin, in March, earning
the right to represent the state in the national competition.
There were 42 teams participating in the national tournament, with
Franklin High School from the state of Washington coming out on top. The
Rhinelander team went 2-2 in the four rounds, beating teams from
Northern Mariana Island and Hawaii, while losing to teams from Michigan
and Ohio.
The team consists of juniors Amber McReynolds and Mark Gaber, sophomores
Dan Kinney, Autumn DeMet, Jill Vocke and Megan Thompson, and freshman
Kate Zambon.
The Rhinelander team came very close to winning the national tournament.
Kathy Vick-Martini, the teacher-coach for the Rhinelander High School
team, said if the team had received just one more point on two different
ballots in the rounds that they lost, they would have been in the
finals. "I was so proud of all of them," she said. "They can't wait to
try and get back to the national tournament again next year,"
Vick-Martini added.
In addition, the Rhinelander team racked up several individual honors.
Most Outstanding Attorney awards went to Dan Kinney, Autumn DeMet, Amber
McReynolds and Mark Gaber. Meanwhile, Most Outstanding Witness awards
went to Jill Vocke and Megan Thompson. "We received more individual
speaking trophies than any other team," said Coach Vick-Martini.
Vick-Martini says it was a great experience for the students. "Once the
kids got over the disappointment of not getting into the top 10, they
realized how well they had done," she said, adding that the team won on
8 of the 12 ballots during the four rounds of competition.
