State Bar program will focus on the perception and reality
of diversity
Sept. 23, 2011 — Promoting workplace diversity and inclusion will
be the focus of a day-long program sponsored by the State Bar of
Wisconsin’s Diversity Outreach Committee in collaboration with the
Association of Corporate Counsel – Wisconsin Chapter on Friday,
September 30 in Milwaukee.
The State Bar program, "Today's Diversity: Perception and
Reality," will feature the insights of both working Wisconsin
attorneys and Atty. Sean Carter, a 1992 Harvard Law School graduate and
national lecturer who uses a healthy dose of humor to probe issues
ranging from legal ethics to marketing.
The goal is to offer lawyers and others interested in promoting a
diverse workforce practical insights into the challenges inherent in
developing and implementing workplace diversity initiatives. The program
will highlight different approaches that both minority-owned and
majority-owned law firms have used to promote the services of diverse
lawyers. It will also explore ways that diverse attorneys can develop
their professional competitive advantage through the use of effective
marketing skills, including the appropriate use of social media.
The program will include a networking luncheon and a keynote
presentation by Carter. Using insightful anecdotes and humor, Carter
demonstrates that while some level of bias is inevitable, it can be
overcome as we continually strive for greater diversity in our
workplaces, schools and communities.
Other presenters will address the status and impact of state and
federal laws and policies on diversity efforts. The event is open to the
public and would be beneficial for any business interested in promoting
diversity. Tuition for the event is $35 for State Bar members, $15 for
students and $50 for others. For more information or to register contact
the State Bar at 800-728-7788 or read the program
brochure.
The State Bar of Wisconsin is the mandatory professional
association, created by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, for attorneys who
hold a Wisconsin law license. With more than 24,000 members, the State
Bar aids the courts in improving the administration of justice, provides
continuing legal education for its members to help them maintain their
expertise, and assists Wisconsin lawyers in carrying out community
service initiatives to educate the public about the legal system and the
value of lawyers. For more information, visit www.wisbar.org.
