Here at the Wisconsin Lawyers Assistance Program (WisLAP), our theme for this month of Thanksgiving centers on gratitude, and we want to shine a spotlight on the individuals who make our mission possible: our dedicated volunteers. Their efforts and commitment make it possible for us to provide comprehensive support to lawyers across Wisconsin.

    The Power of Peer Support

Peer support provides a vital function in the services offered by WisLAP. When members reach out to WisLAP, we often match them with colleagues who have navigated similar challenges.

Our peer support volunteers offer callers the valuable perspective of colleagues who understand the pressures and demands of the profession and provide a level of empathy and understanding that friends and family often cannot. This connection helps lawyers, judges, and law students feel less alone in their struggles, fosters a sense of belonging, and combats feelings of isolation.

Beyond Peer Support: A Multifaceted Impact

WisLAP volunteers contribute in a variety of other meaningful ways.

She invites you to find out more about how WisLAP supports lawyer well-being.

They serve as friendly faces at our events, engaging with the community and sharing information at our tables; they educate and inspire their colleagues by delivering presentations at conferences and training sessions; they offer guidance and insight by contributing to our blog; and they act as our passionate ambassadors, promoting WisLAP and encouraging those in need to reach out.

Furthermore, a dedicated group of volunteers forms the WisLAP committee, generously giving their time, thoughts, and ideas. Their collective efforts ensure that WisLAP continuously evolves and improves to better serve the legal profession.

    Our Deepest Gratitude

To all our WisLAP volunteers, both veterans and newly recruited, we extend our wholehearted appreciation. Your desire to support WisLAP and the broader legal profession inspires us. We recognize your invaluable contributions, hard work, and commitment to giving back.

    In all sincerity, thank you.

    Incorporating Gratitude into Your Life

Studies show that acts of gratitude can be a supportive intervention in the treatment of anxiety and depression, as they increase positive feelings and emotions.

To practice gratitude, set aside time each day to reflect on the good things in your life, no matter how small. It can be something as simple as the sound of birds chirping in the morning or a great cup of coffee. Start with small, intentional practices, and you will notice a significant shift in your mental and emotional well-being.

Here are a few practical tips you can try to incorporate gratitude into your daily life:

    • Journal: Spend a few minutes each day writing down three things you are grateful for.

    • Meditate: Spend 5-10 minutes meditating to focus and reflect on the positive aspects of your life.

    • Express gratitude: Say thank you often to friends, family, colleagues, and others in your life. Whether it’s giving them a simple “thank you” or writing them a meaningful note, express your appreciation regularly.

    • Involve your family: Encourage family members to share what they’re grateful for during meals, car rides, bedtime, etc. For instance, go around the table at dinner and ask everyone what they were grateful for that day.
