Feb. 7, 2018 – Young lawyers: Get advice from the bench, tips on jump-starting your practice, and meet your peers from across the state at the ninth annual Young Lawyers Conference from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Friday, March 16, at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee.
The conference, sponsored by the State Bar of Wisconsin Young Lawyers Division (YLD), offers free CLE for all lawyers within the first five years of practice or under the age of 36. The YLD is committed to providing leadership training and networking opportunities to members.
“It’s a full day of free CLE geared toward young attorneys and their interests,” said Emily Stedman, YLD secretary and co-chair of the conference along with Kristen Hardy, a YLD board member.
Gain Tips from the Bench
Learn from four judges at the noon panel, as they speak on their experiences on the bench, and provide tips for young attorneys
“We’re very excited about this panel,” Stedman said. “This is a very informal panel with plenty of time for the judges to answer questions.”
The judges include:
-
Judge Kitty Brennan of the Wisconsin Court of Appeals District I,
-
Magistrate Judge Nancy Joseph of the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Wisconsin
-
Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Joe Donald, and
-
Milwaukee Municipal Court Judge Valarie Hill.

Boost Your Communication Skills, Get Hints on Handling Student Loan Debt
Learn how to communicate with members of all generations – the Baby Boomers, Gen-X, and Millennials – from consultant and speaker Chris DeSantis of cpdesantis.com – who will discuss navigating generational diversity in the workplace. “This is really practical advice on how you work with others, based on their generation,” said Stedman.
Karen Bauer, civil unit staff attorney at the Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee, is returning again this year to give her very popular talk on student loans. “She offers great, practical advice,” Stedman said. “This is always very well received.”
Other presentations include:
-
How to Jump-start Your Practice, from the Milwaukee Bar Association
-
Ethics Hooks and Ladders, with Aviva Kaiser, State Bar ethics counsel, and Thomas Watson, Wisconsin Lawyers Mutual Insurance
In addition to the CLE programs, the YLD will hold its annual meeting, and present its 2018 Outstanding Young Lawyer and the Outstanding Mentor awards.

Network, Network, Network … and Prizes
There will be plenty of opportunity to take time and meet your peers at the conference, with networking opportunities during breaks in between CLE programs, a networking lunch, and the after-party.
“There is more time to talk with other YLD members,” Stedman said.
And don’t miss out on the chance for prizes (hint: bring plenty of business cards).
