April 15, 2015 – Register now for your chance to get CLE for a bargain price at the 2015 Annual Senior Lawyers Division Continuing Legal Education Program on May 13.
This year’s program has two distinct sessions:
Retirement and Taxes
The morning session will focus on important and current retirement, tax, estate and other retirement planning issues appropriate for the senior lawyers – those over age 50 and/or who are retired. The session will be led by Philip J. Halley, Melissa Selinger, and Ben Brunette from Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C.’s estate and tax planning areas.
Areas to be explored in the morning session include:
The assets senior lawyers should spend or use first in retirement – such as IRAs with an inherent income tax.
The assets to spend or use last – such as low basis property that would get a step-up in basis, or Roth IRAs that might be income tax free to beneficiaries after death, or life insurance or other assets that might be free of income tax
Advantages or disadvantages of Roth IRA conversions for estate planning purposes, including opportunities for charitable giving from retirement accounts, as well as the impact of the U.S. Supreme Court's June 12, 2014, ruling in Clark v. Rameker that inherited IRAs are not exempt from claims of creditors under the Bankruptcy Code, and whether this decision goes beyond "inherited IRA," and alternative techniques to protect inherited IRAs and other retirement benefits.
Trusts for "successful" children to achieve estate tax benefits for them, to protect them from professional liability exposure, or to defeat creditors – where they might have successful but leveraged businesses.
The ability to have beneficiaries as trustees.
Lincoln as Lawyer
The afternoon session focuses on Abraham Lincoln as a lawyer “for the ages.” Led by John Skilton, a past State Bar president and partner with Perkins Coie LLP of Madison, this session will follow Lincoln’s extraordinary legal career from prairie lawyer to national lawyer to the presidency, and beyond.
From listening to his legal mentors to studying his most important cases, you will get to know Lincoln as a lawyer, and be able to draw parallels to your law practice and today’s ethical boundaries.
Cost is $20 for SLD Members
As in the past, this continuing legal education is an unusual bargain for a State Bar program – $20 for SLD members and $30 for non-members for approximately 4 CLE credits. The program will be submitted for CLE credit, and may vary. The final number approved by the Wisconsin Board of Bar Examiners will be indicated on your CLE Tracker on the State Bar’s WisBar website.
