Dec. 5, 2012 – In 2012, the Wisconsin Law Foundation (WLF) awarded more than $24,000 to public service and education programs statewide. But for every grant distributed, there were many worthy requests left unfunded.
“Because of the generous support of our members, more than 3,000 students, teachers, parents, attorneys, and judges across the state were able to participate in the Wisconsin High School Mock Trial program this year,” said WLF President Dean Dietrich. “Thanks to member support, Teen Court programs in Crawford and Grant counties were able to sustain and expand their critically needed services. In Green Bay, the Mediation Center received vital funds to expand its services to include nonthreatening temporary restraining orders. While financial support of the Foundation has positively impacted literally hundreds of individuals and families throughout Wisconsin, there are many programs that we had to turn away.”
Following is a sampling of the kinds of programs the WLF turned away:
Our Courts Wisconsin is a new State Bar of Wisconsin program that educates the public about the courts and the legal system. The Public Education Committee Court Education Task Force, which comprises members of the legal profession and the community from statewide, hopes to hold the first public presentations in the spring of 2013.
The Midwest Center on Law and the Deaf promotes and protects the constitutional and civil rights of deaf and hard-of-hearing persons.
The Woman’s Resource Center of Racine provides individually tailored services to help victims of domestic violence heal from the wounds of abuse and achieve safety and self-sufficiency for a lifetime.
The Student Hurricane Network at the U.W. Law School provides legal aid to low-income or indigent victims of major natural disasters.
“We need your help today to continue to grow the Foundation so we can fund worthy programs like these and expand our impact in furthering our mission of law-related public service and education,” said Dietrich.
“Please consider an end-of-the-year gift to the Wisconsin Law Foundation,” he said. Your support will help us to continue to fund innovative and creative programs that improve the vision of the American Justice System and will ensure important public service and education projects like Mock Trial continue to grow – even in tough economic times.
