Known as latchkey children, this generation came of age when women were joining the workforce in huge numbers. </p><p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;">Numbering about 65 million, Generation X is significantly smaller than the Boomer and Millennial generations, but what Gen X lacks in numbers they are gaining in influence.</p> <ol style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;"> <li><strong>Gen X accounts for more than 51% of leadership roles globally.<sup style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 0; ">1</sup></strong> With an average of 20 years of workplace experience, they’re primed to assume nearly all top executive roles. Because they're a smaller generation, Gen X will only be about 20% of the workforce, meaning a war for experienced talent could be coming. </li><li><strong>Gen Xers are seen as the most engaged generation in the workforce.<sup style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 0; ">2</sup></strong> Gen X workers tend to focus on accomplishing work goals and contributing to the success of the business. To tap into this, organizations need to value their ideas and give them a voice. </li><li><strong>Gen X tends to be independent and entrepreneurial in their management styles.</strong> It’s a carryover from childhood when they were expected to make decisions and organize their own time. This can be a challenge when they manage Millennials who crave more feedback and interaction. </li><li><strong>Gen X is as technology savvy as their Millennial counterparts.<sup style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 0; ">3</sup></strong> In fact, research by Nielsen indicates Gen X is actually the most connected generation. But Xers are more skeptical of new platforms and often need to see more proof before they’ll buy in. </li><li><strong>Gen X excels in conventional leadership skills.<sup style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 0; ">4</sup></strong> Gen Xers have demonstrated leadership skills equal to their Boomer counterparts. This includes developing new talent at their organizations and driving the execution of business strategies to bring new ideas to fruition. </li><li><strong>Gen Xers are known for getting things done.<sup style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 0; ">5</sup></strong> Gen Xers tend to keep their heads down and assume their work speaks for itself. Ensuring they have the tools and resources to do their jobs well is one of the best ways to increase their productivity and work quality.</li></ol> <p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;">Every generation is made up of individuals, meaning generational tendencies don’t apply to everyone. However, if you’re running into issues with someone from a specific generation, stop and think about whether addressing generational differences might improve the situation. That’s according to <a href="https://elists.wisbar.org/t/2422411/42495631/49355/22/">Verizon’s 2018 Data Breach Investigations Report</a>. </p><p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;"><a href="https://elists.wisbar.org/t/2422411/42495631/49356/23/">In a recent blog post</a>, Steven Fritz, a privacy and cybersecurity attorney, outlines the key elements of effective cybersecurity. </p> <p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;">First, review and improve your administrative policies and procedures:</p> <ul style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;"><li>Require strong passwords (long, complex ones are best) </li><li>Ensure your remote access connections are encrypted – and don’t use public computers </li><li>Keep information only as long as you’re required to, then securely dispose of it </li><li>Require strong passwords and encryption when using mobile devices</li></ul> <p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;">Second, implement technical safeguards:</p> <ul style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;"><li>Encryption, encryption, encryption </li><li>Require two-factor authentication </li><li>Properly configure your firewall </li><li>Use cybersecurity software and keep it updated </li><li>Backup your critical data as often as you can </li><li>Monitor and log all activity on your network</li></ul> <p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;">Third, don’t overlook other vital actions such as:</p> <ul style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;"><li>Physical safeguards like locking doors and file cabinets </li><li>Cyber insurance </li><li>Employee training</li></ul> </p> <p style="margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 7px;">Finally, have a Written Information Security Program (WISP). A WISP spells out the administrative, technical, and physical safeguards protecting the privacy of information a company stores. It reduces the odds of a cybersecurity incident or breach.
