No matter what type of law you practice, there are times when your clients will have to wait to meet with you. Maybe they arrived early. Maybe you are running a few minutes behind. Whatever the case may be, how good is your waiting room game?

It may seem like a trivial matter. How do the right chairs or lamps make you a better lawyer? The short answer – they don’t. However, they do influence your clients’ perceptions of your abilities. If you went into a doctor’s office for the first time and the lobby was dark, the chairs were ripped, and there was a musty smell in the air, you might have second thoughts about his or her competence and diagnosis.

Here are a few ways you can help make a great first impression and improve your brand at the same time.

Clean it. It almost goes without saying, and yet we did. It’s that important. No one wants to sit down and find a sticky armrest or end up with a sneezing fit from all the dust.

Cut back on clutter. Providing magazines or newspapers as reading material are great standards of any lobby. However, make sure they are recent, in good condition, and they are not strewn across every available surface.

Have a seat. Is it better to have couch/bench style seating? What about individual chairs? Think about your clients. If they come in as a group, couches may work fine. If your clients are more likely to come in alone, consider having more single seats available.

Watch your walls. It’s been said that walls have ears. Well, they also have mouths – loud ones. Everything from the color (consider incorporating various shades of logo colors) to the artwork hanging on them (try using work from local artists) says something about you. Make sure they’re sticking to your message. Feel free to include awards, provided they are recent or very prestigious.

Consider your brand. If someone saw your website and then walked into your office, would they think they were in the wrong place or they had suddenly stepped back in time? If the answer is yes, you need to make sure your web presence accurately reflects your actual office and vice versa.

Privacy. Try sitting in your waiting area while someone is having a meeting or taking a phone call in nearby offices. Can you hear what they are saying? If you can, you might want to consider adding some soft music to the lobby to help keep your private conversations from reaching other clients.

Provide secure guest Wi-Fi. In the age of mobile devices, it can be annoying to step into a business only to find you have no Wi-Fi signal available. There are some security risks associated with allowing Wi-Fi access, so make sure to check with a network specialist to ensure your connections are safe.
