You won the sweepstakes and they offered you the job. Now it’s time to go double or nothing and start negotiations. Here are some tips to help the odds go in your favor.

Don’t negotiate until you actually have an offer or until the employer starts discussing salary and benefits.

Get a written offer. Did the employer offer a lower-than-expected salary but mention a rewarding bonus program? If the bonus program isn’t in the written offer then you’re just rolling the dice.

You can’t negotiate the offer if you don’t fully understand your job scope, responsibilities, and how your position fits within the company. If you are unclear, ask more questions.

Know your market, the economy, and the company. You will need to justify your reasons for wanting more. It’s a numbers game, and speculation will not bode well for you. Use these tools and salary calculators and talk to past employees – check LinkedIn or with a local alumni chapter.

Choose your words carefully. Focus on your value to the organization. It’s never about what you “deserve.”

You can start the negotiations verbally or in writing. Just make sure to use your best skill set.

Remember that you are wagering. While most employers expect some negotiation* and have some flexibility, you should be prepared for a variety of reactions.

Continue to show interest in the position. Be direct, but polite.

Be flexible. Salary should not be your only draw. More vacation days, a better office, telecommuting, and professional memberships can also be negotiated.

You evaluated your offers, finalized negotiations, and accepted the job you think will be perfect for you. Now it’s time for that all-important first day. Here are five things to remember to help you start on the right foot.

Introduce yourself often. This is especially important in your first few days - even weeks, if you’re joining a larger organization.

Ask questions. Make sure you understand what your priorities are for your first few days, the preferred modes of communication, and how your supervisor will be measuring your success.

Observe the culture. Get a handle on the general attitude of the office, identify existing hierarchies (formal or informal), and keep an eye out for any unwritten rules of conduct.

Befriend an experienced employee. Find someone you will be working with who can show you the ropes, give you insider tips, and help you find the all-important office supply area.

Locate the coffee. Knowing where the coffee is can be a lifesaver in your first week. Just make sure to note when and how often others are taking breaks before filling up that World’s Greatest Employee mug.

Charles Freeman, owner of E-C records in Fort Lauderdale was arrested for a misdemeanor obscenity charge after selling the album As Nasty As They Wanna Be, by the recording group 2 Live Crew to undercover officers. The arrest came two days after U.S. District Judge Jose Gonzalez ruled the album was obscene. Later that week, members of 2 Live Crew were arrested for performing songs from that album.

Freeman was convicted and fined $1000, but his conviction was overturned on appeal. The 2 Live Crew band members were acquitted as well, partially because the cassette tape used at trial was unintelligible. Gonzalez’s ruling that the album was obscene was also overturned by a court of appeals, saying Gonzalez ignored evidence and based the ruling on his own feelings.
