It’s the Story of Your Life… Sort Of

Whether you are looking for your first legal job or are wanting to make a change, having a stellar resume is critical to your success. Before you let loose with a reflexive eye roll or a sarcastic burn in response to this seemingly obvious statement, did we mention there are some unique guidelines you should follow as a lawyer? No? Well, we’re mentioning it now, so get ready for some life-changing insights.

If These Five Things Are on Your Resume, Remove Them. Now.

An objective. Despite its inclusion on many online resume templates, a description of your aspirational career goals like “Arguing a ground-breaking civil rights case before the U.S. Supreme Court” is a better fit for your bathroom mirror motivational sticky notes. The implied objective of any resume is to obtain employment, so there is no need for further clarification.

Stuff every functioning attorney should know. If it’s a “should” it’s not making you stand out. While, “Look at me! I’m competent!” isn’t the worst message you can send, it is certainly not the best. Save the space you would have used highlighting your Microsoft Word® prowess for a specific example of how you successfully used e-discovery software.

Additional languages you studied, but don’t speak. Most of us took a foreign language class at some point in our lives, but unless you’re a native speaker, fluent, or conversational (as in beyond asking where the bathroom is) leave it off.

Irrelevant personal interests. Legal recruiters have mixed opinions on the inclusion of hobbies as a way of humanizing applicants. A general rule of thumb is to include them only if they hold some relevance to the job. Applying for in-house counsel at Fiskars®? Go ahead and include that love of scrapbooking! Otherwise, save it for your Tinder® profile… or maybe not.

That time you were a Third Division Putt-Putt Champion. Obscure awards mean nothing to resume reviewers, and it says something about the prestige an award carries if they have to look it up. Best practice is to include awards only if they are relevant, well known, or self-explanatory. Our apologies if anyone’s self-esteem took a hit just now. We’re sure your parents are still very proud.

Including these five things can bring your resume down just as quickly as typos, incorrect word usage, and Comic Sans (just don’t). For more resume no-nos and how-tos check out these helpful articles:

Social Media: What Happens Here Never Stays Here

Fancy dinner? Instagram that entrée!

Shocking ending to your favorite TV series? Tweet it! (No spoilers.)

Bad day? Cryptic Facebook post!

In today’s world of social media proliferation, we are documenting more and more of our lives for friends, family, and strangers. Potential employers have taken notice. A recent survey from CareerBuilder revealed that 60% of employers research job candidates on social media sites.

Some of you might feel the urgent need to lock down or delete your social media pages, but that same survey showed that not having an accessible social media presence could hurt you too. Around 40% of employers are less likely to offer an interview to candidates if they can’t find any information about them online. Profiles that have been overly “sanitized” can also raise red flags, as hiring managers are left wondering what you’re hiding.

So, what exactly are employers looking for when searching your social media profiles? Professionalism and personality. Are you going to represent them well online? Are you going to fit in with the company culture? Here are some suggestions for sprucing up your social presence before you start pounding the pavement:

Start with your profile picture. Make sure it is a good quality picture of you and inoffensive.

Delete provocative posts, drug/alcohol references, and derogatory comments about work.

Make sure your social profiles do not contradict any information contained on your resume.

Keep family photos, vacation photos, practice-related content, and hobby posts.

Delete sullen or cynical posts.

If you want to move beyond a safe profile to one that shows you as a social media influencer, take a look at the suggestions in these articles:

You have a great resume. Your interview outfit is on point. You’ve practiced answering hundreds of possible interview questions. You even made sure your handshake doesn’t feel like a dead fish. You wait eagerly for the email or phone call that could change your life. It comes, but it’s not the answer you hoped for.

Job rejection got you down? Try these tips for getting back on track.

It’s not the end of your world. It’s a fact of life – no one lands every job they apply for. But that can be a good thing. Being rejected for one job means you’re free to keep going after a job that’ll most likely be an even better fit than the one you didn’t get.

Stop the spinning thoughts. Self-doubt about your interview performance can quickly drown you in disappointment. Instead, follow up with the hiring manager to ask how you can improve your interviewing skills or resume for the future.

Keep your frustrations private. Don’t make negative posts on social media about the company that rejected you, and avoid sending a snotty response to a rejection email. This keeps the door open for that company to consider hiring you for a different position in the future.

Get back in the game. If you put your job search on the back burner while waiting to hear from an employer, it’s time to kick your search activities back into high gear. Pursue multiple opportunities at once, work your network, and try out new job search sites.
