    New Hires, Promotions, Partners

    Matthew E. Carlton, Case Western Reserve 2014, has joined the Milwaukee office of Goldstein & McClintock LLLP as an associate focusing on litigation, transaction, and creditor’s rights matters.

    Anna L. Loess, DePaul 1999, has joined Richter & Phillips LLP, Madison, as a partner. She formerly was a partner with Hill Glowacki LLP, Madison. She focuses in family law, probate and trust administration and litigation, guardianship and conservatorship matters, estate planning, and elder abuse litigation.

    Lori MeddingsLori Meddings, Marquette 2001, has joined Quarles & Brady LLP as a partner in the intellectual property practice group in the Madison office, counseling and assisting clients on a wide variety of trademark prosecution and enforcement matters. She handles opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, where she has represented clients in numerous fully briefed cases resulting in final decisions, and has registered and enforced trade dress, in particular color trade dress, in the U.S. and other jurisdictions.

    Dave Osswald, Virginia 1999, has been promoted to chief people and diversity officer of MillerCoors, Milwaukee. He previously was associate general counsel, supporting human resources and integrated supply chain in the legal department at MillerCoors. Dale Johnson, Marquette 2009, has joined the MillerCoors legal team as assistant general counsel. He previously was a partner at Shook Hardy & Bacon, Kansas City.

    Carlos R. PastranaCarlos R. Pastrana, Univ. of Puerto Rico 2003, has been promoted to partner at MWH Law Group LLP, Milwaukee, and continues to focus on labor and employment law in Wisconsin, Illinois, Puerto Rico, and other jurisdictions. As a native Spanish speaker who is fully bilingual, he advises and trains local, national, and international private and public-sector employers with both English- and Spanish-speaking unionized and non-unionized workforces on how to handle day-to-day issues that arise from managing employees and provides legal advice in labor and employment matters to clients with operations in Latin America, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Puerto Rico.

    Jessica P. Culotti, U.W. 2008 magna cum laude, Stacie M. Kalmer, Marquette 2010 magna cum laude, and Amy L. MacArdy, Marquette 2009 cum laude, have been named shareholders at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c., Milwaukee.

    Culotti is with the employee benefits practice and advises governmental employers, corporate clients, and Taft-Hartley funds in areas including plan administration, fiduciary obligations, and compliance with the Internal Revenue Code, ERISA, and other applicable federal and state laws.

    Kalmer is with the employee benefits practice and counsels multiemployer, corporate, and governmental plan clients on issues, including plan design and administration, fiduciary compliance, and federal and state law corporate governance issues.

    MacArdy is with the litigation practice. She concentrates in product liability litigation, including the defense of toxic torts and prescription drug and medical device suits. Her practice also includes intellectual property, complex commercial litigation, and appellate work.

    Douglas J. Huenink, U.W. 2013 cum laude, and Brent A. Simerson, Marquette 2010, have joined the firm as associates. Huenink is with the corporate law practice. He previously worked in the mergers and acquisitions transaction services group of a Big Four accounting firm, primarily focusing on providing tax due diligence and tax structuring services to private equity investors and public companies in connection with both buy-side and sell-side transactions.

    Simerson is with the litigation practice and focuses on product, health care, and governmental liability. He has experience serving the needs of a variety of industries, including manufacturing, construction, engineering, architectural, health care, and insurance, as well as governmental entities.

    Nicole N. SchrierNicole N. Schrier, U.W. 2011, has been promoted to partner at Neuberger, Griggs, Sweet & Smith LLP, Watertown. Her practice concentrates primarily in estate planning, probate and trust administration, real estate, and municipal law.

    Bonnie ShuchaBonnie Shucha, U.W. 2014, has been appointed associate dean for library and information services and director of the Law Library at the U.W. Law School. She joined the U.W. Law Library staff in 1999 and has served as reference & electronic services librarian, head of reference, assistant and associate director for public services, and deputy director. She has held leadership roles in the Law Librarians Association of Wisconsin and the American Association of Law Libraries and is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Communications Committee. She has also written numerous articles, including several in the Wisconsin Lawyer, and is the creator of WisBlawg, the U.W. Law Library blog.

    Mergers, Relocations, New Offices

    Cody Horlacher, Marquette 2013, and Daniel Necci, Marquette 2005, have formed Horlacher Necci – Injury Lawyers, a firm dedicated to serving victims of accidents with offices in both southeastern Wisconsin and middle Tennessee. Horlacher also is the current representative to the Wisconsin Assembly’s 33rd District. Necci is the former Walworth County district attorney.

    Appointments, Elections

    Gov. Scott Walker has appointed Laura Crivello, Marquette 1993, and Audrey Skwierawski, Georgetown 1992, to the Milwaukee County Circuit Court. Crivello, a Milwaukee County assistant district attorney, will replace the Hon. Jeffrey Kremers, who will retire in July. Skwierawski, a Wisconsin assistant attorney general, replaces the Hon. John DiMotto, who retired in February.

    Awards, Degrees, Honors

    Will KramerWill Kramer received the Whistleblower of the Year award from the Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council. Kramer, formerly a Congressional investigator and risk-management and safety consultant, gave information to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel regarding hazards posed by industrial barrel recycling plants. The paper’s resulting “Burned” investigation led to significant fines and safety improvements. Kramer wrote about whistleblowers in an article in the March Wisconsin Lawyer.He is a law student at U.W. Law School (graduation expected in December 2018) and clerks at Kasieta Legal Group LLC, Madison.

    Anniversaries, Retirements

    Steven Barkan, Cleveland Marshall 1975, is retiring as director of the U.W. Law School Law Library. He also is Voss–Bascom Professor of Law. In 2015, he received the Classroom Teacher of the Year Award from the Wisconsin Law Alumni Association. He is chair of the Wisconsin Board of Bar Examiners, and he has served on numerous ABA accreditation site-visit teams. He is a co-author/editor ofFundamentals of Legal Researchand founding editor ofPerspectives.

    Gimbel, Reilly, Guerin & Brown LLP, a Milwaukee-based trial and litigation law firm, is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018. Franklyn M. Gimbel founded the firm in 1968. Stanley P. Gimbel joined the firm a year later, followed by former federal prosecutors Richard E. Reilly and Thomas E. Brown and former Department of Justice Special Agent D. Michael Guerin. Currently, 16 lawyers are part of the firm.
