Veterans Law Center Opens, Find Out About Volunteer Opportunities

Nov. 7, 2012 – The Veterans Law Center (VLC), a free legal center staffed by volunteer lawyers, paralegals, and law students opens its doors at the City-County Building in Madison tomorrow.

The VLC, which provides brief legal advice, information and referrals on a variety of civil legal matters to low-income veterans and their families, was developed by the U.W. Law School Pro Bono Program, in partnership with the Dane County Bar Association, and the Dane County Veterans Service Office. Funding is provided by the State Bar of Wisconsin, Habush, Habush & Rottier S.C., and Porchlight Inc.

Having a central resource for veterans seeking legal assistance will help alleviate the challenges faced by local veterans. Fewer veterans will miss out on receiving quality legal information simply because they are not sure where to go for help. VLC will serve a central resource providing accurate legal information for veterans in need providing brief legal advice, information and referrals on a wide variety of civil legal matters, including:

    • Help identify the proper course of action in a legal matter
    • Explain court rules and procedures
    • Assist with the completion of court forms
    • Provide referrals to alternative legal resources when appropriate

The center is open on the second Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.at the City-County Building, 210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Madison, and the fourth Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Porchlight Inc., 306 N. Brooks St., Madison.

Training is available. To get involved, visit Veterans Law Center.
