Wisconsin Law Foundation Grants

Grant Application Instructions

  1. The Wisconsin Law Foundation annually awards Truman Q. McNulty Grants up to $2,300 to charitable or educational programs that promote public understanding of the law, improvement of the administration of justice, or another law-related public service project. Grants will not be awarded for requests for general organization funding, legal representation, personnel expenses, or general overhead expenses.
  2. Applications should be typewritten and no more than three pages in length, including the budget. Each applicant is required to provide one complete, original application package. The application package must include the following:

    1. Applicant Description: Briefly identify your organization, and provide your address and general purpose or mission.
    2. Project Objectives: Please describe the purpose(s) for which grant funds are requested, including your intended outcomes, the activities or plan by which you intend to accomplish these outcomes, the target population, collaborative efforts, and any other relevant features. Because this is an important aspect of the grant request, applicants are encouraged to take time in providing this information and clearly explain how the grant monies would be spent.
    3. Budget and Financial Information: Please include a detailed and itemized budget of all expected project expenses and revenue. Also, describe other funding sources and/or efforts to obtain funding for the project.
    4. Statement of Agreement: Please include a statement that your organization agrees to carry out the project for which the funds are requested, if granted, and to use the funds for no other purpose and to return any funds not utilized in accordance with the grant.
    5. Supporting Materials (optional): Applicants may include a reasonable amount of supporting materials as attachments to be reviewed by the grants committee as time permits.
  3. In making its selections, the Grants Committee will take into account the sustainability of the project; other funding sources; collaborative efforts; the thoroughness and feasibility of the project plan; the target audience; the likelihood and extent of the project's educational impact; and the means by which funds will be used to implement the project.
  4. To be considered for funding, applications must be received by 5 p.m. on the first Friday in April.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 grant application deadline has been changed to
    5 p.m. on Friday May 15, 2020.

  5. Applicants will be notified of the Foundation's grant award decisions by May 31.
  6. Applications receiving a favorable funding decision but containing any specific conditions as part of the provisions shall notify the Foundation within ten (10) days of their acceptance of the conditions. Payments on the grant shall not be made until the conditions have been met.
  7. If a grantee refuses to meet the conditions imposed by the Foundation, the offered grant may be withdrawn.
  8. Where the nature of the grant permits, payment will be made during the fiscal year (July 1 - June 30) of the grant period.
  9. Successful applicants will provide a report, due February 1 of the grant year, on the use of their funds before applying for subsequent funding. These applicants are asked to list objectives for their proposals, explain how their grant award was used, and what was accomplished.

The grant deadline is 5 p.m. on the first Friday in April each year.
