Mentoring Award

The Young Lawyers Division (YLD) is for State Bar members under 36 years old or in their first five years of practice. The YLD provides leadership training and networking opportunities. It also encourages its members to be active in the State Bar, local and specialty bar associations, and communities. YLD presents the Outstanding Young Lawyer Award and Outstanding Mentor Award.

The Outstanding Mentor Award recognizes a Wisconsin attorney who has made an exceptional contribution to the life and career of a young attorney. The nominee must have six or more years of practice experience, be a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin, and have been in good standing with the State of Wisconsin for more than 12 months.

YLD Mentoring Award - Michael Rosenberg

This year’s Outstanding Mentor is Michael Rosenberg, managing attorney at Community Justice, Inc. (CJI). Michael has been practicing law since 1990 and joined CJI in 2011 after moving to Madison. He focuses his practice on criminal defense, including appeals, and as a court-appointed guardian ad Litem in family law cases. He has years of experience in the courts at all levels in Wisconsin, and it’s apparent he has not been shy about sharing the wisdom he’s gained in that time with young lawyers.

As the awards committee found, “Michael’s willingness to take young lawyers under his wing, provide guidance on all aspects of the legal practice, and encourage these young lawyers to leave their comfort zones and take on new challenges has been critical to the development of these young lawyers. Overall, Michael’s mentorship has enabled many young lawyers to flourish, both inside Community Justice and beyond as they take their experiences with them to new and challenging opportunities."

Michael is also a past recipient of the Milwaukee Young Lawyers’ Service Award for leading the Landlord/Tenant Hotline, as well as the Award for Outstanding Services Provided to the Volunteer Lawyers Project. He also has been actively involved in the State Bar’s public education activities (including Mock Trial) and has a long history of volunteering in the community with the Milwaukee Young Lawyers Association, the State Bar of Wisconsin, the American Bar Association, and various neighborhood associations.
