Job Description: Rural Mutual Insurance Company seeks an attorney with 5-8 years of civil litigation experience for an in-house litigation position. This position will be split between individually litigating files and supervising outside counsel.
Qualifications:
- Five or more years of civil litigation experience. The ideal candidate will have experience defending personal/commercial auto, premises liability, or municipal liability cases;
- Juris Doctor and admission (or ability to be promptly admitted) to the Wisconsin State Bar required;
Job Requirements:
- Supervisory Files:
- Supervises litigation involving the Company and/or its insured(s), including files and issues of a complex nature;
- Communicates with outside counsel regarding file status and progress;
- Reviews and evaluates file as litigation progresses and seeks settlement authority as necessary;
- Oversees outside counsel throughout the discovery process and motion practice. Reviews pleadings, papers, and briefs drafted by outside counsel prior to filing;
- Assists outside counsel in the negotiations and resolution of claims and suits.
- Litigation Files:
- Reviews incoming Summonses and Complaints and evaluates same for coverage-related issues;
- Independently develops and aggressively presents defense strategies on the insured’s behalf from inception through trial, including the preparation of pleadings, written/oral discovery, motions, and briefs;
- Analyzes complex legal and factual issues while conducting extensive and well-reasoned legal research;
- Provides effective and timely information, legal advice, and other services;
- Independently conduct trials, depositions, arbitration, and mediations;
- Communicates with outside counsel, Company employees, court, witnesses, opposing counsel, and co-counsel with professional diplomacy and discretion;
- Stays current on state statutes and court decisions and analyzes how statutes and court decisions affect the interpretation and enforceability of various policy provisions;
- Participates in weekly claims file reviews and acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience, including Company’s adjusters;
- Drafts Reservation of Rights letters; and
- All other duties as assigned;
Location: This is a remote position within the State of Wisconsin.
