    Administrative Law Judge - Equal Rights (Remote in Wisconsin)

    The candidate hired into this position may request to work remotely up to 100% of their time, with expected in-person attendance at hearings as well as other meetings or conferences. Hearings for the current vacancy will be held primarily in northwestern Wisconsin. The selected candidate for the current vacancy will be required to live within a 40-mile radius of the Chippewa County Courthouse (711 N. Bridge St; Chippewa Falls, WI) within six months of appointment. High speed internet access is required to meet the needs of remote work.

    Position Summary

    The Administrative Law Judge will adjudicate and mediate cases arising under the Wisconsin Fair Employment Act, the Wisconsin Open Housing Law, the Wisconsin Public Accommodations Law, the Wisconsin Family and Medical Leave Act, and other statutes enforced by the Equal Rights Division.

    Salary Information

    Starting salary is between $83,200 and $94,827 per year depending on qualifications and experience, plus excellent benefits.

    The classification title for this position is Attorney (schedule 09, range 75). A 12-month probationary period will be required. This position is represented by the Wisconsin State Attorneys Association.

    Pay will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan in effect at the time of appointment. Starting pay may vary for current state employees.

    Job Details

    This position requires the ability to travel to participate in hearings and meetings, with occasional overnight stays.

    All state employees must report their COVID vaccination status, whether vaccinated or not and provide supporting documentation if vaccinated. Newly hired employees will be required to submit this information within their first two weeks of employment.     Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e. a US citizen or national or a lawful permanent resident) at the time of appointment. DWD does not sponsor visas and is not an eligible OPT employer for those with F1 visas. This is not a contract position. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.

    Qualifications

    Qualifications marked with an asterisk (*) below will be evaluated in the first step of the selection process. Additional qualifications may be evaluated in subsequent steps.

    Minimally qualified applicants will meet the following required qualifications:

    *current license to practice law in the State of Wisconsin (in good standing).

    *experience conducting trials, administrative hearings or litigation.

    *experience applying knowledge of Wisconsin Rules of Evidence.

    *experience developing a variety of clear, concise and accurate written legal documents.

    experience organizing and prioritizing work to meet deadlines.

    communicating and relating interpersonally with others to maintain positive and productive working relationships.

    Well-qualified applicants will have experience related to one or more of the following preferred qualifications:

    *applying and interpreting Wisconsin law relating to civil rights or equal opportunity (e.g., fair employment, open housing, public accommodations, family/medical leave, etc.).

    *serving as an Administrative Law Judge (or similar role).

    negotiating or mediating complex settlements.

    managing change in a dynamic work environment.
