    Senior Litigation Attorney - In House

    Job Description: Rural Mutual Insurance Company seeks an insurance defense/litigation attorney with minimum five years of litigation experience, including trial experience, for an in-house litigation position. The ideal candidate will provide effective legal representation for the Company and its insureds by handling moderately complex litigation. Litigation includes all aspects of civil litigation, including trials and proceedings in all forums, whether at the local, state, or federal level, mediation, arbitration, and administrative proceedings, and any necessary appellate work. This attorney will provide legal advice to assist the timely disposition of claims in a fair and equitable manner consistent with relevant statutes. This is a work from home position with travel anticipated throughout the State of Wisconsin. Travel to our Home Office in Madison will be required on occasion.

    Qualifications and Job Requirements:

    • Five or more years of insurance defense litigation experience, with specific experience in personal/commercial auto, premises liability, and municipal liability preferred;
    • Trial experience required;
    • Able to independently develop and aggressively present defense strategies on behalf of the Company’s insureds from inception through trial, including the preparation of pleadings, written/oral discovery, motions, and briefs;
    • Able to timely and independently handle full-time high-volume case load with little to no direct supervision;
    • Able to analyze complex legal factual issues while conducting extensive and well-reasoned legal research;
    • Provide effective and timely information, legal advice, and other services;
    • Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel, and co-counsel with professional diplomacy, courtesy, and discretion;
    • Independently conduct trials, depositions, arbitrations, and mediations;
    • Prior experience in a claims department or staff counsel organization is a plus;
    • Participate in claims file reviews;
    • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience, including Company’s adjusters;
    • Drafts Reservation of Rights letters, reviews incoming Summonses and Complaints to determine if there are coverage issues that require attention, potential to handle Med Pay subro claims; and
    • The ability to travel throughout the State of Wisconsin, including to our Home Office in Madison;

    Education and Licenses: Juris Doctor and admission (or ability to be promptly admitted) to the Wisconsin State Bar required.
