    Contract Law Specialist I – Milwaukee Public Schools
    Job Summary
    The Contract Law Specialist I handles litigated workers’ compensation matters by working with the district’s third-party administrator to prepare cases for hearings and assists the Assistant City Attorney in negotiating settlements in these cases. Negotiates, drafts, and reviews contracts, agreements, leases and memoranda of understanding (“MOUs”) on behalf of the district. Advises Procurement staff and other district administrators on the required legal elements of contracts and leases.

    The salary range is $69,609 - 100,343 (12-month)

    Qualifications
    • Law degree from an American Bar Association-accredited law school is required.
    • Licensed to practice law in the State of Wisconsin preferred.
    • Cannot be in poor standing with any state bar.
    • Prior experience in workers’ compensation.
    • Prior experience with or knowledge of contract law preferred.

    Responsibilities
    • Handles litigated workers’ compensation cases in conjunction with the City Attorney’s Office and directs the district’s third-party administrator on managing these claims.
    • Prepares litigated workers’ compensation files for hearing, including preparing and submitting filings of exhibits on behalf of the Office of the City Attorney.
    • Analyzes litigated workers’ compensation claims, reviews applicable medical records, and proposes strategies for best defending against such claims.
    • Attends pre-hearings and mediations on workers’ compensation cases.
    • Negotiates, drafts and reviews contracts, agreements and leases on behalf of the district.
    • Drafts and negotiates memoranda of understanding between the district and partners.
    • Advises district staff on contracting – contract language and protecting the district, mitigating risk and liability to the district.
    • Advises administration on the appropriateness of entering into agreements or contracts with certain external parties.
    • Advises and shapes contract language to protect the district’s interests.
    • Reviews and analyzes certificates of insurance.
    • Researches and interprets case law and outlines the relevance of specific precedents to current issues.
    • Provides exceptional customer service through positive communication and fostering a welcoming environment.
    • Actively supports the MPS Strategic Plan.
    • Completes other duties as assigned.
