Article On Point for Advanced Civil Procedure Class

I teach the course in advanced civil procedure with Dean Joseph Kearney at Marquette University Law School. When preparing for the section on default judgments in Wisconsin, I saw Craig Nelson’s article “Too Late? Interests of Justice Trump Default Judgments” (November 2012). With your permission, I have distributed it to the class.

This is an area of practice that has engendered some confusion. Over the course of 40 years of practice, my sense has been that something of a culture of default has developed in the Wisconsin courts. That is a larger topic than can be explored here, but the Wisconsin Supreme Court now seems to be imposing order in this area, as Mr. Nelson’s useful and well-written article suggests.

    Welcome Law Students!

I want to thank the State Bar staff for hosting my Lawyering Skills students on April 1. I heard so many wonderful comments today! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the staff’s hard work and willingness to meet – repeatedly – with the students to provide an overview of State Bar services and programs. I liked the pictures posted on Facebook, too.

Few events are win-win, but I think this one is. Of course, I will contact the State Bar later this spring to set up next year’s date.

    Thank You!

Thank you for the opportunity to be profiled in the 10 Questions column (March 2013). Many lawyers have contacted me and told me that it was a great article. It was a great surprise to have such a large response. I wish the Wisconsin Lawyer continued success.

    Great Looking Magazine

The February issue is a great looking and superbly put together publication. I’m sure you have received many kudos for it.

The magazine staff did a wonderful job with my Hot/Not piece, not only in the layout but also in the editing. Thank you. I also enjoyed reading Dianne Molvig’s adaption of my text to the Wisconsin legal scene. The staff has been great to work with, and I hope to have more opportunities in the future.
