National Mock Trial Award Recognizes Wisconsin Participants

Each year, National High School Mock Trial Championship Inc. recognizes an individual who has demonstrated exemplary dedication and commitment to the goals and ideals of the National High School Mock Trial Program. Three people from Wisconsin have received the Golden Gavel Award:

Kathy Vick-Martini (2006) - Vick-Martini is in her 25th year of coaching the Rhinelander High School Mock Trial team, although she retired from teaching in 2007. During her tenure, the Rhinelander team has won the state championship 13 times, was the national champion in 1989, and placed second nationally in 2004.

Larry Bakko (2005) - Bakko has volunteered with the Mock Trial Program since 1991. He's helped develop computerized scoring systems for tournaments in Wisconsin and other states and for the national tournament. In his day job, he's the information technology director at the Wisconsin Dells Visitor and Convention Bureau.

Dee Runaas (2003) - Runaas is the State Bar's law-related education coordinator, and she serves on the National Mock Trial board. For 20 years, she's been instrumental in making sure the Wisconsin High School Mock Trial Program runs smoothly.
