State Public Defender's Office receives
second Wisconsin Forward award
The Wisconsin State Public Defender's Office
received the 2001 Wisconsin Forward award. This is the second time the
office has received the award. The agency was recognized for its
commitment in providing accessibility to clients, accessibility to the
general public, programs that prevent children from offending,
innovation in the use of computer technology, and overall contributions
to the criminal justice system. Wisconsin Forward's mission is to
promote and recognize the adoption of quality and high-performance
management principles and practices in order to help Wisconsin
organizations achieve world-class status in products and services; meet
international competition; and enhance learning, continuous improvement,
and performance.
Award winning Wisconsin Lawyer article
focuses on school expulsion
Alison Julien and Patricia Engel
are the 2001 recipients of the Hon. Charles Dunn Author Award, presented
annually by the State Bar Communications Committee. Their article, "School
Expulsions: Not all are equal," appeared in the October 2001 issue
of Wisconsin Lawyer magazine. The award will be presented at
the Volunteer Lawyers Recognition program, held during the State Bar's
Annual Convention, on May 15, 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.
Julien is an assistant professor of legal writing at Marquette
University Law School. She practiced in special education law,
expulsion, and litigation at Schott, Bublitz & Engel S.C.,
Brookfield, where she remains of counsel.
Engel is a shareholder with Schott, Bublitz & Engel S.C. A former
special education teacher, she practices in special education law,
expulsion, and civil litigation.
The award, named after Wisconsin's first chief justice, recognizes
writing excellence in Wisconsin Lawyer articles.
Laura N. Whipple and Carlyle H. Whipple also received certificates of
commendation for their September 2001 article, "Wisconsin
Shipwrecks: Finders Keepers?"
