Gimbel to receive Distinguished Law Foundation Award
Local attorney is 2002 Charles L. Goldberg Award winner
MADISON, January 24, 2002 - The Fellows of the
Wisconsin Law Foundation is pleased to present the 2002 Goldberg Award
to Attorney Franklyn M. Gimbel. The Charles L. Goldberg Distinguished
Service Award is presented to a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin who
has a long-standing record of service both to the legal profession and
to the public. The award is named after the former State Bar president
who was a leader in launching free legal services to the poor. Gimbel
will receive the honor during a dinner at Milwaukee's Grain Exchange
Room on Friday, Jan. 25.
Gimbel, the founding partner of the Milwaukee law firm of Gimbel,
Reilly, Guerin & Brown, earned his law degree from Marquette
University Law School in 1960. He was a member of the State Bar Board of
Governors from 1977-1983, and served one year as its chairman. In 1986,
Gimbel was elected president of the State Bar of Wisconsin. Gimbel is
additionally also a member of the Milwaukee Bar Association, and served
as president from 1976-1977. He is a fellow in the American College of
Trial Lawyers and the American Bar Foundation, as well as the Wisconsin
Law Foundation.
In May 1994, former Gov. Tommy Thompson appointed Gimbel chairman of the
Wisconsin Center District Board of Directors. He also serves as a
director of the Spirit of Milwaukee and was appointed to the Board of
Directors of the Federal Public Defender program for the Eastern
District of Wisconsin by Chief Judge J.P. Stadtmueller. Gimbel belongs
to the Downtown Milwaukee Rotary Club and served as its president from
2000-01. He is a director of the Equal Justice Coalition and serves as
its fund-raising campaign chairman.
The purpose of the Fellows is to assist the Wisconsin Law Foundation in
carrying out its objective of making contributions to charitable or
educational programs which promote public understanding of the law,
improvement of the administration of justice or other law related public
service. Since its inception in 1951, the Foundation has supported such
projects as the High School Mock Trial Tournament and the Youth for
