Gimbel to receive Distinguished Law Foundation Award
Local attorney is 2002 Charles L. Goldberg Award winner

MADISON, January 24, 2002 - The Fellows of the Wisconsin Law Foundation is pleased to present the 2002 Goldberg Award to Attorney Franklyn M. Gimbel. The Charles L. Goldberg Distinguished Service Award is presented to a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin who has a long-standing record of service both to the legal profession and to the public. The award is named after the former State Bar president who was a leader in launching free legal services to the poor. Gimbel will receive the honor during a dinner at Milwaukee's Grain Exchange Room on Friday, Jan. 25.

Gimbel, the founding partner of the Milwaukee law firm of Gimbel, Reilly, Guerin & Brown, earned his law degree from Marquette University Law School in 1960. He was a member of the State Bar Board of Governors from 1977-1983, and served one year as its chairman. In 1986, Gimbel was elected president of the State Bar of Wisconsin. Gimbel is additionally also a member of the Milwaukee Bar Association, and served as president from 1976-1977. He is a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American Bar Foundation, as well as the Wisconsin Law Foundation.

In May 1994, former Gov. Tommy Thompson appointed Gimbel chairman of the Wisconsin Center District Board of Directors. He also serves as a director of the Spirit of Milwaukee and was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Federal Public Defender program for the Eastern District of Wisconsin by Chief Judge J.P. Stadtmueller. Gimbel belongs to the Downtown Milwaukee Rotary Club and served as its president from 2000-01. He is a director of the Equal Justice Coalition and serves as its fund-raising campaign chairman.

The purpose of the Fellows is to assist the Wisconsin Law Foundation in carrying out its objective of making contributions to charitable or educational programs which promote public understanding of the law, improvement of the administration of justice or other law related public service. Since its inception in 1951, the Foundation has supported such projects as the High School Mock Trial Tournament and the Youth for Justice Program.
