Racine County Bar Association Recognized for Public Service
MADISON, May 17, 2001 - The Racine County Bar
Association was recognized by the State Bar of Wisconsin and the
Wisconsin Law Foundation with two awards for their handbook, Making
Schools Work for All Children: A Parent's Toolbox of Rights and
Strategies. The handbook, developed in conjunction with Legal
Action of Wisconsin, Inc., was honored with an Award of
Exceptional Achievement and the Gordon Sinykin
Award for outstanding public service. The handbook, created by
local attorneys and distributed within the Racine community, received
funding from the State Bar's Local Bar Grant Competition. The grant
competition awards funding to local bar associations that develop and
implement public service projects that may be replicated by other bar
associations statewide.
Racine's handbook assists parents in making positive changes to their
children's schools, and building on the school's strengths. The handbook
covers topics ranging from enrollment and curriculum to a parent's right
to be involved in school policy matters, privacy matters involving
school records, and other student rights, including free speech and
searches.
The State Bar of Wisconsin is the mandatory professional association,
created by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, for attorneys who hold a law
license in Wisconsin. With more than 20,000 members, the State Bar aids
the courts in improving the administration of justice, provides
continuing legal education for its members, and carries out initiatives
to educate the public about the legal system. The Racine County Bar is
made up of more than 200 attorneys and judges, many of whom are active
in local public education activities.
For more information on the handbook, contact Racine County Bar
President John Becker at 633-7530. For more information on the State Bar
