    Former Client Conflicts: Just What Is Substantially Related?, Webcast Replay: Thursday, Dec. 6, 8:30 - 10 a.m. CT, 1.5 CLE/1.5 EPR credits

    Quite often, a conflict will arise when seeking to represent a new client in a matter that appears to be related to the representation of a former client. This seminar will discuss the concept of “substantially related” under SCR 20:1.9 and provide guidance to lawyers regarding the factors to consider when determining whether a proposed representation is substantially related to a representation of a former client.

    Relationships Among Law Firms: Of Counsel, Affiliations, and Office Sharing, Webcast Replay: Thursday, Dec. 13, 8:30 - 10 a.m. CT, 1.5 CLE/1.5 EPR credits

    Many different office sharing and joint practice relationships are used to help lawyers engage in the representation of clients and assist in the sharing of expenses. This program will discuss the different types of relationships that can arise amongst lawyers, and the legal issues that need to be addressed when developing such relationships.

    Lawyers have come to rely upon the Internet for marketing to new and potential clients. This program will discuss the legal issues that arise when engaging in web marketing and using other web-related services to attract clients.     The duty of confidentiality is a cornerstone of the attorney-client relationship. Questions often arise about the extent of this duty when dealing with a former client and a past representation. This program will discuss the difficult issues that arise when responding to requests for information about a former client and a former representation.

    Telephone Seminars

    Ethics and Social Media Issues, Monday, Dec. 17, 12 - 1 p.m. CT, 1.0 CLE/1.0 EPR credit

    Social media has become the new yellow pages for communicating about a lawyer’s practice. Because social media is an interactive process, there are many opportunities for a lawyer to make mistakes and run afoul of the Rules of Professional Conduct. This program will address the use of social media in the practice of law and marketing of a law practice. The speakers will address issues from use of a Facebook page for obtaining information about a party to monitoring recommendations about a lawyer posted on the internet.

    Fees and Fee Collection, Friday, Dec. 21, 12 - 1:00 p.m. CT, 1.0 CLE/1.0 EPR credit

    Billing clients and collecting fees has often been described as an art and not a science. The Rules of Professional Conduct address fees and fee arrangements but are less specific about any restrictions on the collection of fees. This seminar will discuss the basics of fee arrangements and collection of fees, and address areas where lawyers must exercise caution when pursuing the collection of fees from a client.
