Opening Plenary: Locking Up Our Own

Opening AMC is plenary speaker James Forman Jr., professor of law at Yale Law School and a 2018 Pulitzer Prize-winning author for Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America.

Forman teaches and writes in the areas of criminal procedure and criminal law policy, constitutional law, juvenile justice, and education law and policy. His particular interests are schools, prisons, and police, and those institutions’ race and class dimensions.

Speaking from his experience as a public defender, a founder of a charter school for incarcerated teens, and a law professor, Forman will discuss the criminal justice crisis with both data and human stories, and offer ideas for how to make a difference.

Plenary Luncheon: The Life and Turbulent Times of Chief Justice John Roberts

Attend the plenary luncheon with Joan Biskupic, a full-time CNN legal analyst who has covered the U.S. Supreme Court for 25 years. Before joining CNN in 2017, Biskupic spent a year as a visiting professor at the University of California, Irvine Law School. She previously was an editor-in-charge for Legal Affairs at Reuters and the Supreme Court correspondent for The Washington Post and USA Today.

She is the author of a forthcoming biography of Chief Justice John Roberts (The Chief, spring 2019) – and will talk about what motivated the most powerful justice in the U.S.

Thursday CLE: Improving Diversity and Inclusion in the #MeToo Era

Join experienced litigator Rekha Chiruvolu of Nixon Peabody, Los Angeles, and learn the best practices for developing and implementing a successful diversity and inclusion strategy. You’ll learn how these best practices intersect with professional development, recruiting, and business development. In addition, hear implications of the #metoo movement as it relates to the practice of law, and law firm internal and external practices.

In this session, find out how the #metoo movement affects law firms and lawyers, and learn best practices for diversity and inclusion policies.

Thursday CLE: How Being Asian Got Me Into Trouble

Simon Tam, founder of the world's first and only all-Asian American band, The Slants, wanted to change the world by creating an anti-racist band. Little did he know, the decision would take him from the studio to the state penitentiary, and from the stage to the U.S. Supreme Court. Hear this fascinating tale of how the worlds of civil rights and IP law collided when an ordinary trademark case turned into an eight-year journey for self-identity, and blurred the lines between art and social activism.

In addition, you’ll learn about developing legal strategies for your appellate cases, the client’s perspectives as a case progresses through the appellate process, and the impact of effective client communication and management in appellate practice.

Closing Plenary: Cultivating a Workplace Culture Less Conducive to Sexual Harassment and Misconduct

Dr. Andrea Cochran and Chris Osborn of ReelTime CLE will present “That'll Never Happen Here: Cultivating a Workplace Culture Less Conducive to Sexual Harassment and Misconduct” for the closing plenary.

Cochran and Osborn will discuss developing practical, sustainable strategies for preventing sexual harassment behavior in the workplace without completely regulating or controlling employees’ work lives.
