Pro Bono Certification for Inactive & Emeritus Members

As part of its order approving rule changes to bar membership categories, the Wisconsin Supreme Court also created SCR 10.03(3)(am) which allows attorneys in Inactive status and those who elected Emeritus status on or after July 1, 2021 to provide pro bono legal services through a qualified pro bono program if they meet certain conditions. The change took effect on July 1, 2021.

Qualified pro bono programs are defined in SCR 31.01(12). They include programs run by WisTAF grantees, Wisconsin bar associations, Wisconsin law schools, and other programs approved by the Board of Bar Examiners. We maintain a list of those programs on WisBar.

Inactive or new emeritus attorneys who want to take advantage of this rule change must comply with the certification provisions of SCR 10.03(3)(am). We’ve set up an easy certification process that will get you started. Click here to go to the certification and contact the Pro Bono Program Manager with any questions.
