    New Hires, Promotions, Partners

    Sheila Conroy, Michigan 1991, has joined Clark & Gotzler Attorneys at Law, Madison and Milwaukee. She represents private sector and public sector employers in employment law litigation matters and tort claims before courts and administrative agencies and has counseled employers on employee discipline and discharge issues and drafted employment contracts, employee handbooks, and restrictive covenants. She worked previously at other private firms and was director of the Wisconsin Office of State Employment Relations.

    Travis DeLucenayTravis DeLucenay, Marquette 2005, has been named a partner at Zetley Law Offices S.C., Milwaukee. His practice continues to focus on tax law and representing clients in state and federal tax controversies.

    Roy N. Fine, U.W. 1982, has joined Murphy Desmond S.C. and works from the Appleton and Madison offices. He focuses on business transactions, real estate matters, finance, estate planning, probate, and intellectual property.

    Jonathan Klem, U.W. 2000, has been promoted to senior vice president and manager of estate administration at Country Club Trust Co., Kansas City, Mo. He previously was vice president and trust officer.

    Aleksandar Kostich, Marquette 2001, has been named managing attorney of the New Mexico Public Defender for Taos County. Kostich previously spent 10 years as a senior trial attorney and subteam leader in the felony division of the New Mexico Public Defender in Albuquerque.

    Carl R. KuglerCarl R. Kugler, U.W. 1998 cum laude, has joinedthe business law team at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c. as a shareholder and will lead the corporate law practice in Madison. Kugler has experience in mergers and acquisitions, corporate law, product distribution, and commercial transactions and in the formation, development, and financing of start-up and emerging growth companies.

    Elizabeth Krick-Nelson, U.W. 2015, and Jeffrey P. Schultz, Drake 2014, have joined the Madison office of Lawton & Cates S.C. as associates. Krick-Nelson focuses on family law, estate planning, and civil litigation. Schultz focuses on civil litigation with an emphasis on plaintiff’s personal injury litigation.

    Jane Pribek Salem, Marquette 1994, passed the February 2016 Tennessee bar exam and was promoted to staff attorney at the Court of Workers’ Compensation Claims in Nashville, Tenn. She was formerly editor-in-chief and editor-at-large for the Wisconsin Law Journal.

    Hoyt R. Stastney, Minnesota 1997, has joinedBronfman E.L. Rothschild, Madison, as general counsel. He previously was an equity partner at Quarles & Brady LLP, where his focus included securities, investment management, mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, and financial institutions.

    Charity A. McCarthy, U.W. 2003, and Rachel E. Mielke, U.W. 2008 magna cum laude, have joined Stroud, Willink & Howard LLC, Madison,as members, and Douglas C. Scriver, U.W. 2013, has joined the firm as an associate. McCarthy practices in estate planning, probate and trust administration, and business organization and succession planning. Mielke devotes the majority of her practice to family law, estate planning and probate, and business and real estate transactions. McCarthy and Mielke previously were with other Madison law firms. Scriver’s practice focuses on real estate and business transactions, construction law, and business litigation and dispute resolution.

    Mergers, Relocations, New Offices

    Robyn Shapiro, Harvard 1977, Julie Rusczek, Michigan 2003, and Jeremy Shapiro-Barr, Marquette 2006, have formed Health Sciences Law Group LLC, 7670 N. Port Washington Rd., Suite 201, Fox Point, a boutique firm that works with health care and life science companies to promote and protect innovation. The three lawyers previously were with Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP.

    Mary C. Turke, U.W. 1996, has opened Turke & Strauss LLP, 613 Williamson St., Suite 210, Madison, with Samuel J. Strauss, a class-action attorney practicing in Seattle, Wash. The firm represents businesses, employers, creditors, developers, and start-ups.

    Barbara J. Zabawa, U.W. 2001, has changed the name of her firm to the Center for Health & Wellness Law LLC. The firm’s mission is to improve legal access and compliance for the health and wellness industries.

    Bryan R. Browning, Minnesota 2008, has been elected president of the Minnesota Hispanic Bar Association.He focuses his practice in products liability, personal injury, wrongful death, construction, subrogation, and commercial litigation at Bassford Remele P.A., Minneapolis.

    Patrick J. FiedlerPatrick J. Fiedler, Marquette 1980, has been appointed to the Public Defender Board. He is a partner at Hurley, Burish & Stanton S.C., Madison, where his practice includes civil and criminal litigation, mediation, and arbitration.

    Awards, Degrees, Honors

    Bob Corris, Berkeley 1970, took first place in the 400-yard individual medley in his age group at the 2016 U.S. Masters Swimming Spring National Championships in Greensboro, N.C. He also won medals in five other events, including two third-place awards. Corris was an All-American swimmer at Harvard. He operates Robert B Corris SC, Hartland.

    Two Foley & Lardner LLP partners were honored by Marquette University at its 2016 Alumni National Awards. Jay Rothman, Harvard 1985, received the professional achievement award in recognition of his leadership role with Foley & Lardner and for serving as chair of the board of Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. He is a member of the firm’s management committee and a former chair of the transactional and securities practice. John Wilson, Georgetown 1996, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Les Aspin Center for Government. He is a member of the firm’s transactional and securities practice and energy industry team.

    The Milwaukee Bar Association honored several lawyers at its annual meeting and luncheon in June. Herman B. John, Marquette 1973, retired from the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office, received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Maureen A. McGinnity, U.W. 1982, Foley & Lardner LLP, received the Distinguished Service Award. The Hon. Carl Ashley, Marquette 1983, and the Hon. Mary E. Triggiano, U.W. 1988, both with the Milwaukee County Circuit Court, received the E. Michael McCann Distinguished Public Service Award.

    Dianne Post, U.W. 1979, was chosen for the Volunteer Lawyers Program for Love of Justice Pro Bono Awards as the Community Clinic Attorney of the Year in Phoenix, Ariz. She hosts a pro bono legal clinic every Thursday afternoon at the NAACP and is an international human rights lawyer.

    Gilbert Southwell, U.W. 1981, received the 2016 Meritorious Service award from the National Federation of Municipal Analysts in Chicago for his advocacy work on municipal disclosure, including coauthoring whitepapers on municipal-new-issuance practice, conflicts of interest, and charter school financings. He is with Wells Capital Management Inc., Menomonee Falls.

    Retirements

    Judge Paul B. Higginbotham, U.W. 1985, of the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, Dist. IV, Madison, will not seek reelection for his seat in the April 2017 election. He was appointed by Mayor Paul Soglin as the city of Madison’s first municipal court judge in 1992. He was elected to the Dane County Circuit Court in 1994 and was appointed to the court of appeals in 2003 by Gov. James Doyle.
