New Mock Trial Site Features Online Registration Tool for Teams, Volunteers

Oct. 22, 2014 – The State Bar of Wisconsin is swapping its traditional Mock Trial registration process for one that is more user-friendly and easy to navigate. The new online registration tool launched in mid-September, and more than 78 teams and volunteers have already signed up for the upcoming season.

“We hope that the registrations will continue to come in at a steady pace now that teams and volunteers can take care of everything online,” said State Bar Public Education Manager Katie Wilcox. “Plus, doing away with paper forms allows us to reach more people because most potential teams and volunteers have access to our website all the time.”

Teams have until Dec. 1, 2014, to register for the regional tournament, but Wilcox said volunteers can sign up any time prior to the tournament, which is slated for Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015.

Tournaments typically take place in about 10 to 15 regions around the state. The location and number of regions fluctuates each year depending on how many teams sign up from a particular area.

“Last year we ran tournaments in 13 regions, from Eau Claire to Racine,” Wilcox said. “We expect to run a similar event this spring.”

Members of the State Bar, law students and members of the public are encouraged to sign up and take part in the Mock Trial experience. Volunteer activities range from coaching a team to coordinating a regional competition. Attorneys and judges can also participate by judging a round or two of competition, or providing general tournament assistance.

“Volunteering for our public education programs is a great way for members to get involved with the State Bar,” Wilcox said. “It’s also a unique opportunity for volunteers to make a positive, sometimes life-changing impact on a group of students.”

This season marks Mock Trial’s 32nd year of operation in Wisconsin. Last May, the State Bar hosted the National Mock Trial Championship for the first time in 20 years. More than 1,000 students, parents and volunteers from 43 states, as well as Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and South Korea attended the event. This year, the National Mock Trial Championship will be held in Raleigh, N.C.
