March 21, 2014 – Twenty-four young lawyers who were nominated by legal professionals statewide are attending the second State Bar Leadership Development Summit in Green Bay today.

“The Leadership Summit brings together newer lawyers with current bar leaders to give the newer lawyers the tools they need to become tomorrow's bar leaders,” says Jill Kastner, Leadership Development Summit chair.

State Bar of Wisconsin President Patrick J. Fiedler says, “The 2014 Leadership Summit promises to build upon the success of the initial summit held last year. Newer attorneys will interact with veteran bar leaders and both groups will benefit from the exchange of opinions and ideas. Participants will understand not only the importance of involvement in our profession but also how rewarding it can be. Leadership by lawyers is essential to all of our organizations – local bars, specialty bars, and the State Bar itself.”

President-elect Robert R. Gagan opened the summit. He spoke about State Bar involvement and practical next steps to get involved. Other presenters met with attendees during informal 15-minute sessions:

    • Balancing Work, Life, and Bar with Sherry Coley, Ralph M. Cagle, Kevin J. Lyons
    • What Bar Leaders Do and What They Look Like with Toni Caldwell, Jesse Dill, Kevin G. Klein
    • How to Convince Your Boss that Your Bar Leadership is a Good Investment with Renee Ruffin Nawrocki, Kevin J. Palmersheim, Jill M. Kastner
    • Committees, Sections, and Divisions – Finding Where Your Leadership is Needed with Karen M. Bauer, Nilesh P. Patel, Robert R. Gagan

Following the morning summit program and kicking off the fifth Annual Young Lawyers Leadership Conference (YLLC), the Hon. William C. Griesbach, chief judge for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, will deliver the keynote address.

More than 115 young lawyers will attend the afternoon program. The YLLC focuses on fostering the knowledge, skills, and motivation new lawyers need to become active members in the State Bar, local bar associations, and other public service organizations.
