    State Bar Recognizes Journalists with Golden Gavel Award

    Madison, WI – The State Bar of Wisconsin applauds the recipients of the 2012 Golden Gavel Awards for their important contributions to the public’s understanding of our system of law and justice.

    The winners in the Broadcast Media/Television category of the competition are being recognized at the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Summer Conference at the Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake on June 20.

    This year’s Golden Gavel Broadcast Media/Television winner is Reporter Robert Hornacek of WLUK-TV Green Bay for his submission, Explaining ALEC. The enterprise package explores the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, and the group’s impact on the legislative process in Wisconsin.

    AGolden Gavel Certificate of Commendation is going to WXOW-TV La Crosse for coverage of the Eric Koula Case, submitted by Reporter Pete N. Zervakis, Photographer Mark Bronson, Photographer Nick Bjerke, Photographer John Schmidt, and News Director Sean Dwyer.  

    Reporter Diana Normand of WSAW-TV Wausau will also receive a Certificate of Commendation for her submission, Making of a Judge.

    “We applaud all of the hardworking broadcasters who work throughout the 24-hour news cycle to educate the people about the workings of our legislative and judicial systems,” said Attorney Michael Jassak, chair of the State Bar’s Media Law Subcommittee.“Sharing these stories in an accurate, engaging and compelling manner helps ensure that our citizenry remains an involved and active part of our democracy.”
