Nov. 21, 2012 – Law firms, corporate legal departments, and government agencies can provide summer employment and valuable legal experience to first-year law students of diverse backgrounds by participating in the 2013 State Bar Diversity Clerkship Program.

The Diversity Outreach Committee sponsors the program to help employers gain greater access to law students of diverse backgrounds. “The Diversity Clerkship Program brings legal employers and law students together to provide superior client representation through a diverse bar,” said Diversity Clerkship Program Chair Kathleen Chung.

“This unique program offers exceptional clerkship opportunities to law students of diverse backgrounds,” said Chung. “Eligible law students are assigned to employers who offer mentoring as well as hands-on legal work in settings from large to small firms, in-house to government agencies. As a graduate of the program, I can personally attest to the professional value this Bar program brings to both students and employers.”

The program, which has provided firsthand experience in private law firms, corporate legal departments, and governmental agencies for more than 20 years, requires first-year law students to make a serious commitment to accept an assigned match with one of the participating employers. In return, law students receive full-time, paid employment and gain real world legal experience with early exposure to career and networking opportunities. The program offers employers and students a unique opportunity to share experiences and to promote diversity in the legal profession.

Employers can enroll through Jan. 25. For more information, contact State Bar project coordinator Sonabai Kanhai at (800) 444-9404, ext. 6181, or (608) 250-6181 or visit the Diversity Clerkship Program on WisBar.
