Plenary sessions
Thursday morning’s plenary speaker, Jeffrey Rosen, will present The Future of Privacy: Corporate Responsibilities and Individual Challenges. Individuals and companies face increasing pressure to monitor their online reputations in an age when the web never forgets – when every tweet, blog post, and Facebook update is recorded forever in the digital cloud.
Privacy expert Rosen will discuss the range of challenges that individuals and companies face as they struggle to control how much information is exposed to the world. From the perspective of individuals, failure to monitor online reputations can mean the loss of jobs or promotions. From the perspective of companies, the need to protect their online reputations against unwanted disclosures can require a degree of employee monitoring, which in turn can threaten individual privacy. Rosen will provide a roadmap for how it is possible to strike a thoughtful balance between the privacy and reputational interests of companies and employees, drawing on the latest technologies, laws, and data about changing social norms in the workplace.
Thursday’s luncheon speaker is legal humorist Dan White, author of The Official Lawyers Handbook, a satire of the legal profession. White’s unique brand of legal humor will add mirth and merriment to your lunch break, as he explains the hallmarks of lawyerosity and explores the miracle, the tragedy, and the oxymoron that is “legal levity.”
Receptions and networking events
On Wednesday, James M. Brennan of Milwaukee will be sworn in as the 56th president of the State Bar of Wisconsin by Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Shirley S. Abrahamson. Immediately following the 5:30 p.m. ceremony, attendees are invited to a complimentary reception honoring Brennan.
Thursday night’s Attendee Reception, 5 - 6 p.m., is the time to get to know the variety of exhibitors, mingle with colleagues, and enjoy complimentary hors’ d’oeuvres, beer, wine, and soda.
Immediately following the Attendee Reception is another complimentary event, the Member Recognition and Networking Celebration from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Awards will be presented to attorneys, judges, law firms, organizations, and law students who have made outstanding pro bono, public service, or public education contributions to the community and the profession, and awards also will be presented to members who are involved in State Bar service.
How to register
Register by May 5 to receive a reduced early-bird rate of $295; after May 5, $345. Members can earn up to 12.5 CLE credits, including 3.0 EPR credits. PINNACLE™ will record selected presentations and offer them via webcast at a later date at no additional cost to registrants. Ultimate Pass holders may attend the Institute for no additional charge.
