Oct. 19, 2011 – Wisconsin lawyers are once again taking part in National Pro Bono Celebration activities, Oct. 23-29, to recognize the contributions that so many lawyers make for the public good. The State Bar of Wisconsin is coordinating a Casual for Justice Day, and both law schools also have events scheduled.
The third annual National Pro Bono Celebration, sponsored by the ABA’s Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service, is a coordinated effort to demonstrate the important difference that pro bono legal services make to the country, our justice system, and the people they help.
The State Bar of Wisconsin is pleased to support this important celebration and related events in Wisconsin. You can find Wisconsin events listed on the national event calendar. If your firm or organization is planning an event that you don’t see on the map, be sure to submit it.
Three Wisconsin celebrations
The State Bar’s Pro Bono Program is coordinating the first annual Go Casual for Justice fundraiser to benefit the Summer Public Service Fellowships program at the University of Wisconsin Law School. The goal is to raise awareness of public interest law and the enable more law students to serve in public interest law positions over the summer. Attorneys and staff at participating offices donate $5 (or more) to wear casual attire to work on Friday, Oct. 28 (or any day an office designates during Pro Bono Week). Marquette University Law School has organized a luncheon Celebrating the Impact of Pro Bono on Friday, Oct. 28, at 1 p.m. in Eckstein Hall. Among the law school’s various pro bono projects, a panel of community partners will describe the impact of the pro bono work on the communities they serve and the difference the work of volunteer law students and attorneys makes. The University of Wisconsin Law School will hold its Pro Bono Society Celebration at the law school on Oct. 25-26. Dean Margaret Raymond and the faculty recently approved the creation of the Pro Bono Society, so all students now have the opportunity to be inducted after completing 50 hours of pro bono service. State Bar pro bono opportunities
The national celebration is only one week, but “the State Bar of Wisconsin offers information and pro bono programs throughout the year that make it easy for members to get involved,” says State Bar Pro Bono Coordinator Jeff Brown.
“In the Pro Bono Resource Center, we have a searchable pro bono opportunities guide along with about a broad range of ways that can become more involved with pro bono work in your community.” says Brown.
